Sugar Free Cranberry Sauce Ok?

(Heather Meyer) #1

Hey Hey,

So i made some stellar sugar free cranberry sauce so i could have a tbsp on my Keto meat sandwiches… Here’s my question…

Im on Day 1 of Keto… is it okay to have it? I know that Keto is 20 net carbs… just wondering if Keto takes the same stance Atkins Diet does with not allowing fruit in the first 2 weeks??

What are the carbs in cranberries? I assumed they were high since I looked up dry cranberries and they had a high carb count. I think the biggest thing is carb.totals at this point.

No… i use fresh frozen cranberries.
My cranberry sauce comes out to 1 net carb per tbsp.

Unsweetned fresh from frozen cranberries

I would guess you should be fine.

20 carbs is a (good) guideline. I’ve been as high as 46 total carbs and I didn’t get kicked out. But the eviction number is going to be different from person to person. What’s bad is the X number of carbs that gets you kicked out.

I imagine though that if 20 net carbs is good, then 46 total carbs is probably a similar equivalent i.e. a safe range.

I read that 20 net carbs or 50 total carbs is the rough guideline to follow.

Sorry I should have converted that to net carbs for simplicity’s sake. Fortunately it was on my cronometer history. The 46 total carbs I had that day works out to 29.2 net.

That’s definitely one confusing/misleading aspect I’ve encountered with keto. People say 20g of carbs works for them, others say 50g of carbs keep them in ketosis but most forget to mention if they’re talking total or net. Knowing that specific detail would take a lot of unintentional misinformation out of the equation.

I actually did say total, but I agree it would have been easier to convert that to net since she spoke in terms of net. I was guilty of being lazy when I first posted. Mea culpa in that regard.

Sorry, wasn’t referring to you in particular. Just listening to the podcasts and reading info about what levels of carbs suit certain people on a keto diet, they rarely ever mention if they’re talking about total or net.

Would be interesting to know the stats of total vs net people on the forum.

Cranberries are very non-sweet, about on par with lemons. If you’re just using them as a condiment, you’re fine.

I think the high-carb readings for dried cranberries are for sweetened ones such as Craisins. It’s very hard to find unsweetened dried cranberries (I tried at one point).

yes its pretty much impossible to find dried unsweetned cranberries…
I make my own in my oven.
Just take frozen from fresh cranberries…boil em till they “pop”… drain and then toss in powdered erithrytol and then put my oven to 200 degrees and bake them on a parchment lined pan for seversl hours. They turn out great…a bit time consuming…but great in small amounts in baking and salad recipes
