Sugar cravings

Anyone tried l glutamine to help reduce sugar cravings? I get them bad and am envious of those whose cravings disappear.

I have heard about using glutamine for alcohol cravings but I don’t have personal experience using it. After several months of keto I woke up and realized that my sugar cravings had been gone for a while without me noticing. I had a nutritionist say that it usually takes two or three weeks for them to go away for someone with a close to normal metabolism.

It’s my understanding that L -glutamine can stimulate gluconeogenesis and cause insulin spikes. I was taking quite a bit per Maria Emmerich’s recommendation in her book until I heard the Keto Talk episode where they talk about it spiking insulin. I stopped taking it. Is your fat intake high enough? Increasing fat helps me turn off the sugar cravings.

I’ve used L-Glutamine in the past while trying to resolve gut permeability issues, but knowing that I do now about Gluconeogenesis (GNG), I’ll stay with foods that are high in it which are very, very common on a ketogenic diet!

@Allison, good luck with cravings. Do you consume much of the glutamine-rich foods and notice any decrease in sugar cravings?

…main gluconeogenic precursors are lactate, glycerol (which is a part of the triacylglycerol molecule), alanine and glutamine

I eat a lot of meat, dairy, nuts and some eggs. I dont doubt the gluconeogenesis, but if glutamine helps your body make glucose, wouldn’t you think that the sugar cravings would get worse? Just goes to show how little I know about it.
