Sugar Alcohols

(Christine Marie Benvenuti) #1

Hi…this might be a dumb question, but…"are the carbs in Erythrotol counted as "carbs the same way as everythung else?
I see that the nunber of carbs, and sugar alcohols are equal. Do you subtract “sugar alcohols” the same way you would subtract fiber for a net carb calculation?

Thanks for the info!!!

It’s best to think of sugar alcohols as separate from all other macro nutrients. How the body handles them varies a lot, but none of them are metabolized the same way as carbohydrates. Erythritol isn’t metabolized at all and all of it will be expelled in urine.

Be on the safe side count it as a carb its not metabolised the same way but it still creates a spike in insulin and depending on the sugar alcohol it may have 1 to 3 calories per gram instead of 4.

Be safe count everything that could be a carb as a carb.

I do not believe erythritol has any effect on blood sugar or insulin. But if anyone has any contrary evidence of that, I’ve been wrong plenty of times before.

It had no effect on my bs I’ve eaten a fair amount in some keto baking I did and measured bs for the hours after no change

Just another data point. I drink beverages that use artificial sweeteners, it has no impact on my blood glucose. YMMV.
