Sudden weight gain

Totally miffed. Saturday morning 10 stone 2. This morning 10 stone 7!

What’s happened

5lbs overnight? That will be water weight most likely. What did you eat last couple of days? This is something you will get to see if you weigh daily - just how much your weight can fluctuate.

I weigh daily but in the three weeks I’ve been keto have not seen such a movement.

I think it’s because I’ve not been so great at drinking water when I’m not at work. Drank loads today so hoping its rights it’s self tomorrow.

Not sure my body is as keto as I thought.

KCKO and some would say to throw away the scales. I weigh myself about every month.

Kat, you said you’ve been doing Keto for 3 weeks? This could be water due to your period? I gain up to 8lbs once a month. Annoying, I know, but it will disappear as quickly as it came.

Not to be too vulgar, but I suspect one hefty bowel movement and a bit of sweat will see that number drop.

One thing which I don’t believe is properly discussed is how inaccurate scales can be between measurements. I know that I have two digital scales, and I can quite easily get two different measurements on them, and even on the same scale, when repeated. If you don’t believe me, try this:

  1. Weigh yourself on a scale, after tareing it.
  2. Pick up something that weighs about 2 or 3lb and keep a hold of it.
  3. Get back on the scale, after tareing it again. Keep hold of that 2/3lb item.
  4. After weighing yourself, put down the item and weigh yourself again.

You may be surprised that the numbers at 1 and 4 may be different!

In summary: use the way clothes feel, and waisbands pinch or droop, as a far better signal than the scale!

Thanks for all your replies.

Could be period, but have PCOS. Hoping keto life will balance hormones and regulate period.

Could be lack of water Saturday? Upped water intake Sunday and weight dropped to 10.3 this morning?

Week of camping starts tomorrow, going to be hard work! Beach picnics with now carbs

Yes, water is essential. If you don’t drink enough, your body will retain water. That’s one of the reasons why I don’t trust my scale. I take measurements of my waist, chest, hips, thighs and arms. It’s a better indicator.
