Sudden extreme weight loss?

(Allie Talbot) #1

I have been completely keto for 8 weeks. The first weeks I consistently lost around 2lbs a week and then the last 2 weeks up to this wed I only lost 12 ounces and then 8 ounces. Then suddenly this week I have lost 5 pounds! Weighing at the same time each day around 7pm before eating (OMAD) on Wednesday I suddenly lost 3lbs and everyday around a pound to today (sunday)!! What is going on? This cant be fat?

In your avatar you say: When I began Keto: March 2019

So I’m a little confused. Please clarify.

As for the sudden weight loss, I think you’re right and it’s not fat. The most likely suspect is water. It can come and go very quickly. If you start to feel very thirsty, I think that would be excellent confirmation.

Why not? How active are you ?

How are your measurements? Hydration?

A gallon of water weighs 8 pounds…

Best to weigh first thing in the morning after toilet and before drinking / eating as throughout the day your fluid intake will always cause fluctuations.

Just recently I went to bed at one weight and the next morning was three pounds lighter. Sometimes, it unfortunately goes the other way. It does happen. It’s water. Maybe you ate less salt than usual the day before, had a shift in hormones, or ate nothing that possibly causes inflammation in your body. Three pounds up or down is really in the noise of weight fluctuation.

@Alliet91
You may not appreciate this suggestion (at least not right away), but I’ll offer the same advice I’d give a much-loved family member with the same concern…

The problem is not the pace of weight loss. The problem is that you keep weighing yourself.

Stop.

In a few months of feeling better and becoming more healthy, if you care to then step onto the scale. Otherwise, until then, you’ll be missing the whole point.

Best wishes!

depends on you.

could be real weight loss and some fat and water and it is about what foods you are eating and did ya change anything? you lost ok and then mostly nothing and then the body gives up a big WHOOSH down the scale.

key now is will ya keep it off cause sometimes that is fab til a day or 2 later ya gain all that ā€˜big drop’ back and then wonder WTH?

just keep eating keto. you are getting good results, just let the long term eating of this plan help ya lose lbs even if slow or a whoosh, and let it change your body composition and this all takes time on plan.

best of luck on good success!

That is how I lose weight. In fact, I just had a 2 month stall followed by about a 5 lb weight loss this last week or two. I usually rebound a portion of that loss, then no loss and the cycle begins again. I weigh daily but look at weekly averages to determine true weight loss. My app calculates a weekly average every time I put in a new weight.

It should say I started march 2020 but I was only eating meals with cauliflower mash as I didn’t know much about recipes. When we went in to lockdown 1 the shops were bare so I went back to carbs for lockdown but restarted again 8 weeks ago. I’ve just checked though and it is blank for when I started keto…

I dont consciously exercise but have quite an active job (in a special needs school) my clothes fit better and some I couldnt get on at all before but I’m worried if its water it will just come back!

There is a known phenomenon in the keto world, called a ā€œwhoosh.ā€ It involves the sudden loss of thirty or forty pounds of weight. I don’t know that whooshes have a real explanation, but one common hypothesis is that fat cells replace the fatty acids they shed with water, which they hang onto for some time, then suddenly let go of. In any case, a five-pound mini-whoosh is certainly common.

YES YES and YES! I weigh myself once a monthly the most. Today I was noticing that I am on the verge of having to buy smaller jeans again. That is my validation.

(Allie Talbot) #15

I had wondered this, I was never able to get one in 3 years of fasting alone. Although I thought a whoosh was just when you wake up one morning not over an entire week!

(Allie Talbot) #16

I’m noticing things are getting looser in the time it takes me to wash them and cycle through to their next wear eg switching pyjama sets! So glad to read this it is hopeful! As everywhere states that you loose water weight in first couple of weeks not this far down the line!

Liquid fluctuations, you’re correct you’re not going to burn off 3lbs of fat in a day, that would be insane. But stored water could drop like that all day long. Has something changed? Do you track your intake?

When I was fasting 4-5 days (haven’t done many since the pandemic began; one I think), I’d commonly lose 5 pounds in the first day. And gain a lot of it back when I stopped. In fact, the day I eat, I also drink a ton.

Definitely says it but I’ve no idea why it’s an issue…
