Stuck in this grey area of super low carb but no keto

#1

Hi,

Ive been experimenting with keto quite alot lately and struggling to get into full on keto.

My energy and sleep was suffering massively after one week, so ive went back to eating a small portion of carbs once a day - im still intermittent fasting.

With carbs my energy and sleep are far better but i feel brain fog at times and the yeast infection on my foot is harder to control (i think i could have candida overgrowth)

For the week that i was trying to get into Keto i must have been eating about 70 fat, 20 protein and 10 carbs, but i feel like im stuck in this grey area and not able to get into it (also have been stressed so this is probably a factor)

My question is this: if i persevere will my body get used to burning fat even if i dont make it into clinical ketosis, and will my poor sleeps and lack of energy subside? As long as i have the energy to climb the stairs then i dont mind wether im in keto or not.

My main reasons for doing this are

a) the health benefits and i want to be fat adaptive
b) to treat yeast / bacteria overgrowth for my leaky gut

So you’re eating 10% carbs for your diet? Or 10 grams of total carbs? That makes a big difference. 10% carbs is probably way too much to get into ketosis if you’re eating 1800 or 2000 calories. 10 grams of carbohydrates would be about 40 calories

What your doing is not going to get you adapted and is only occasionally going to even get you in ketosis. The brain fog is because you keep bouncing in and out of ketosis and the body doesn’t have any idea what to do or what you are telling it to do.

You need to regroup and get on the right path. You have to cut out the carb loading. Then when you do, don’t starve yourself with the low caloric intake because your body will go into desperation mode and start hording all the glucose it can store.

Maintain your 20g or less carb intake with a moderate protein consumption and then eat the fats to achieve your suggested maintenance calorie intake. This will get the BMR ramping up and get the process proceeding in the right direction.

I’m currently in a similar situation.
High stress, higm cortisol overdoing everything.
I came off full keto a month or so ago as I was having various issues with low energy, injuries, general feelings of, well despair really.
I carbed up and started to feel better pretty quickly. However, in an effort to keep to “healthy” carbs and still keep them much lower than my previous intake up to year 2017, I decided to run under 50grm net healthy slow absorbing carbs per week day, and most days still around 20. I can ramp up to around 100/150 of a weekend.
Now, I will admit that sometimes those 150grms are not so healthy. However, it’s an ongoing experiment for me to find my levels of carb acceptance and control.
I’m not currently concerned about fat adaptation unless I see the waistline expanding. Current weight hasn’t moved up much, maybe a kilo but it can vary either way by 0.5.
I do omad most days but switch to two meals maybe twice a week. Fasting 24hrs, doesn’t seem to be overley hard, ,uch the same as when I was keto tbh.
This doesn’t answer your questions I know, but to say we are all different and we have to find what works for us. This may not be what works for someone else.
