Struggling to lose weight on keto

(Jana) #21

Garnetta,
Give it a try. I got the lower fat intake advice from Dr Hyman’s staff, even though his method is LCHF, not keto.

I would only recommend lowering fat intake if you know you are fat adapted, and if you have plenty of body fat to be used. I have never tested my ketones. But I am confident that I am in ketosis because of my very low carb intake.

There are so many variations to keto. Like Carl is trying a very different method than I am by eating LOTS of protein along with IF and EF. I might try that once in awhile, just to change it up a bit.

This is one big exploration that we’re all on together. Enjoy the adventure!

Sometimes the weight is not noticeable even if you notice it. My first 30 lbs no one really noticed (and I am heavy but not to the point where 30 lbs would not be noticeable). Then suddenly everyone noticed. I am not sure what happened I barely lost any more weight but they all made comments all of a sudden and had not said anything

Do you do IF?

(bjørn arne) #24

yes and no :stuck_out_tongue: i do intermitten fasting with the 8hours of eating room per 24hours. But on mondays and wednesdayi have jiu jitzu class late and then i have the last meal around midnight, and breckfast around 12 in the afternoon. but when ever i can i try to have last meal at around 8 in the eavning and breckfast at around 12 in the afternoon. But one of the reasons i can do that so comftarbly is that i am not on a stright sceadual of when i eat. if i get realy i hungry or i have visitors and they have brakfast i dont just sit and watch, then i just eat  but keto makes me not hungry also so on days were i have nothing to do i might not eat until 15-16 in the afternoon no problem, and i notice and can se on my polar watch that i have better exercises while on fasting

Mariah,
Are you doing any exercise? A year ago I started out barely able to get around. Could not alternate legs going down stairs. Lots of ankle and leg pain etc. Slowly over time I have improved my fitness and nutrition. I take high quality magnesium which I found extremely beneficial for improving my muscles among other things.

My exercise today consists of one hour daily of intense aerobics mixed with HIIT (high intensity interval training). I do that in two- half hour sets separated by a couple of hours. I usually just walk a fast pace on the third floor where I live. Then every 10 or 15 minutes I hop on my elliptical for 2 minutes to make it more intense.

Yesterday I did my second set outside on quiet pathways with steep inclines for my HIIT.

If dancing is your thing, then do that.

What are you and others on this thread doing for exercise? Believe me when I say the ol’ sayingy, Use it or lose it. It happened to me and I’m only 68.

Hi Mariah,

I have lost that ammount on lchf and then keto (then stupidly went off track for months so now have half of it to lose over again…lol).
As others have said, weight loss is not linear, it does bounce and it does cause the frustration you are feeling.
My wonderful old Dr who supported me through halving my weight told me that times when you stop losing are not so much a stall but are often a weight that you may have stayed at before for a while. She said that if you just keep doing what you are then the body would do some internal healing and then move on down again…she was right, it has worked for me.
Frustrating, undoubtedly…but if you can stick at it and KCKO it will happen, in the meantime hang onto any non scale victories, they will be there if you look for them!
Best wishes :grinning::handshake:

Yes I agree!!! I’m loving all the support I’m getting from everyone! and the tips are really helping. I’ve started to try IF and I think it is helping me. I notice I’m drinking more water and not snacking as much because I have less time in the day to eat lol. I feel so much more confident in this now.

(Mariah Pleake) #28

I don’t do much exercise unfortunately because of my intense back pain but I’m seeing a physical therapist and he has given me stretches to do so that added in with the weight loss I hope to reach my goal of being able to exercise daily!

(Jana) #29

I know what you mean about pain. A year ago I weighed more than you and the pain in my feet, ankles and legs made it very difficult to just get around. Slowly, slowly fitness can return. The body and mind are resilient and pliable. Just be determined and notice daily success. Non-scale victories. There are plenty of folks here to support you along the way.

Glad to hear that suggestions from folks are already helping. That’s awesome!

Hang in there.

Mariah,
If there is a way to join your local YMCA or health club with a pool, doing water aerobics has helped me in the past. Simply walking the shallow end is great low impact exercise. Maybe your PT can give you more water exercises. I chose a time when kids weren’t there, so I didn’t have to dodge splashing and beach balls etc. I enjoyed the tranquility of water aerobics.

You should read my similar post, only you’re doing a lot better than I am. 6 pounds in TEN weeks, fully keto and probably more than 85% of my daily life in a fasted state since 1/10/18. Great to have support here while we figure it out!

Have you tried a recumbent exercise bike they have excellent back support and large seats

I purchased mine from Walmart.com

(Mariah Pleake) #34

I’m so excited I started doing IF and lost about 6 more pounds, although I keep fluctuating between 223 and 225. I’ve noticed my scrubs for work fit better and I finally was able to zip up my jacket lol I haven’t been able to do that since before I had my daughter and she is 2! my husband and I joined the gym and I’m going to starry going to spin classes. I’ve always wanted to try it! He’s been dieting too and lost 30 pounds in just a couple months. I haven’t been under 230 pounds for 4 years so I feel really proud about that!

(Liz) #35

Great going Mariah…it is a lovely thing to notice clothes fitting better and it now matters as much to me as seeing the loss on the scales. If one of the two is changing it motivates me more…the scales were steadfastly stuck but a jacket fits better …then a couple of days ago the scale gave up a few ounces. On previous ‘diets’ this would not have been enough but for me now keto is an ongoing way of life and so any small victory is a bonus as sleep, inflammation etc are already reduced.
Good luck in your return to the gym…I am getting up the courage for aquafit after my hydrotherapy! :grinning::handshake:

(Mariah Pleake) #36

starting to get frustrated again. it’s been a month and I haven’t lost any more weight. I’ve been very strict to my diet with only 1 meal mishap lol. and I fluctuate between 225 and 228 constantly. I stopped weighing everyday so now I only weigh every 2 to 3 days or more because I get so depressed when I don’t see results. I still don’t feel any better and don’t notice and difference in the mirror despite my 1 jacket fits a little better. I see others losing 30 pounds or more on 3 months and it’s so discouraging. is there something I’m doing wrong? I would really like this to work for me since nothing else has worked for me.

(Jean Taylor) #37

I get pretty frustrated too my husband and I are both on keto and he’s practically melting… From what I’ve read it sounds like women lose more slowly then men in general so I try not to be insanely jealous but it’s HARD!

I think for me it’s just about getting my hormones straightened out. I’m losing slowly, but hoping it picks up a bit once that actually happens. Also I would say for me that would still be weighing way too often I can only weigh in the 1st little while after my period after that my water levels go so crazy it’s like up 5 lbs down 1 etc. By only only weighing and charting right after I seem to get a steady loss.

(Mariah Pleake) #38

That’s a good idea. I might try to weigh after my next cycle to weigh and see if I see a difference. I think I’m about to start so that’s part of what’s affecting my mood. I always get super hungry about 1 week before and I keep having super cravings for anything sweet :persevere::persevere::persevere:

(Jean Taylor) #39

I think it’s pretty normal for cravings to go nuts like that before shark week. I have been seriously tempted to chew and spit out a piece of toast all the while feeling completely crazy for it to have even occured to me. Lol

(Mariah Pleake) #40

I think part of my problem was too much protein. I was for drinking those premier protein shakes in caramel and they are so good. I would drink one for breakfast as a meal replacement shake but since I’ve stopped drinking them my weight has gone down a little so I think I’m back on track. losing weight is such an emotional roller coaster!

(Jean Taylor) #41

Yeah those little ups during the month kill me if I decide to weigh even when I know I shouldnt…
