T public. I got a couple of shirts from 2ketodudes.com and they sell from T Public so there are a lot more if you search out Keto. I have 4 shirts now and a hat. Searching out keto patches.
Struggling Newbie. Also question--doesn't bacon have 1 carb, even $14/lb uncured/unsmoked bacon?
I’ve not heard of a store “Loblaw”. Please tell me the owners name is Robert.
[ok, I really stuck my neck out for a cheap laugh on that one. But I just had to, it was just asking for it. “Bob Loblaw”, just say it a few times.]
Awesome! More power to you, sir!
Something i’d Like to see happen is similar. The ingredients listing accurately listing by grams. This sounds a bit trivial, but ingredients like maltodextrin can really screw up the life of a diabetic. Maltodextrin has about 2x the glycemic index as sugar. So why have a statement on sugar free product being safe for diabetics when it replaces one glycemic problem for one that’s even worse? Hence the need for amount of ingredients.
^^^^ this ^^^^
I couldn’t have said it better. Sure, I would have been a lot more verbose
There is a “myth” going around that the founders name was indeed Bob or Robert but apparently the real guys name was Theodore so unfortunately not true. I worked for Loblaws for 13 years and even the staff believed this.
Heh. Did you miss the play on play on words? Say “Bob Loblaw” several times in succession.
Good wikipedia article on the company here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loblaw_Companies
Turns out the “Great Value” products at Walmart are actually rebranded PC products.
And, a quick look at that bacon at Walmart in the US shows it’s also 0 carbs on the nutritional label:
(strangely though, the Great Value brand at Walmart in Canada isn’t though - and the 375g packaging makes me think that it’s actually a Schneider/Maple Leaf product).
Yes, the play on words is why I think the urban legend started. Lol. I believed it for a while too.
I read the part about walmart. Wal-Mart didn’t open in Canada until 1994 (hard to believe I know). I bet they stopped that whole deal as soon as Wal-Mart came here, at least in the Canadian market. At least I would think so.
There were likely relationship / business reasons for giving some of that business to Maple Leaf/Schneider’s - not having everything with one vendor, for example? Me, I’m not a fan of that company - both the fact that they reduced their bacon packaging down to 375g back when pork got really expensive (but then, of course, didn’t put it back to 500g when things normalized), but as well as they took hundreds of jobs out of the Kitchener area, closing the original J.M Schneider’s plant (Schneider’s was founded in Kitchener).
I try to avoid their products (just as I try to avoid Heinz as they closed their plant in Leamington - but French’s saved it and entered the ketchup market - preserving the local economy, so, pre-keto, I bought French’s ketchup). Reminds me - need to get on French’s about producing a low carb ketchup.
I wonder if the zero carbs is only because the serving size is so small? Who eats only 2 slices of bacon I ask?! Either way I would count it as zero, more of a curious question than anything.
Agreed…which is why I’d like to see everything standardized on 100g - levels the playing field.
The food manufacturer’s aren’t responsible enough (eg. most spices, the sample size they use is 1/8 tsp - many are all zero’s for macros at such a small portion size).
Or perhaps have total carbs per package. I can figure out how many carbs per serving on my own. I ignore the suggested serving size anyway, and always do the math for myself.
Just a quick update on the “standardizing on 100g nutritional labels” topic. Decided I’m not satisfied with the response from Health Canada that “our existing guidelines are sufficient for the needs for Canadians”.
I decided to kick over the ant hill - I forwarded the complete communication thread to the Federal Minister for Health. We’ll see if this doesn’t get them to open their minds a little.
Yes! I’ve always been thin, was careful about what I ate, plenty of salads, fish, healthy proteins. But I’ve always been depressed, anxiety, chronic fatigue, poor health; everything. I know the medical community is slow to endorse things, which is why my doctor is not for Keto. But because of $$$, the government, medical community, and health industry sure have endorsed, advertised and recommended ‘grains.’ But yet Keto is the only thing that has helped me. It makes me angry in a way, but I can’t waste time now on the anger. I’ve lost at least half of my life to poor health already!
And now you can live the rest of it, and possibly even more it, in good health.
