Strange reaction to Indian Food

Hi there,

Ive been doing keto/ketovore for a month now, it’s helped me immensely already with my GI issues. Tuesday just gone, my family ordered in an Indian takeaway (it used to be my favourite, pre keto) Well as I had heard that people give themselves “cheat meals”, with some trepidation, I thought I’d have some. The whole thing tasted incredibly sweet, to the point where half way through, I couldn’t finish it. I had a bit of reflux the next day, but nothing too bad.

But when I woke up in the morning, the skin on my my finger tips had gone wrinkly and pruney, like I’d been in the bath for too long. The palms of my fingers were showing very fine veins as well. It appears to be getting better by the day, but it just seemed such an odd reaction and I wondered if anyone had experienced anything similar, or might be able to explain, what may have caused it?

Thanks a lot.

Aaron

Sure. I was asking for what the reaction could be, and what may have caused the reaction? Just the sudden dose of sugar?

Perhaps an allergy? I think many Indian dishes combine a lot of spices. Might have been any one of them. I used to get allergies (angioedema) after eating Indian food, so I have avoided it for a good number of years now.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #5

It sure sounds as though you overdid the carbs. When I overdo the carbs, I don’t get pruney, but my skin gets greasier and my acne starts showing up again—not to mention my arthritis.

And be prepared for lots of things to taste an awful lot sweeter now. When I started keto six years ago, I couldn’t abide the taste of unsweetened chocolate, and now I enjoy it, and even 80% dark chocolate tastes far too sweet!

Thanks for the replies. Yeah I agree, Paul. I’ve noticed so many things taste really sickly, now. I’ve noticed the smell of starchy things smell and taste really off putting, as well.
But yeah, my palms are really dry and the finger tips still wrinkled. I’ll hopefully speak with my GP tomorrow.

Thanks for your help.

I do cheat sometimes, but never experienced such reaction.

Hi there, this is certainly the oddest reaction I’ve read about. When I still tried to incorporate vegetables into my WOE my joints would start to ache so I gave up on that. Then I tried a fruit experiment to channel Dr. Paul Saladino though I didn’t go crazy, I had the tiniest piece of mango, and my body’s reaction was, too sweet and nothing to gain from this. The same feeling I began to develop around my raw, local honey, too sweet and what was the point anyway? So I now apply it topically instead. I still enjoy the mild sweetness of my raw milk, but that might also change in the future.

On this WOE our bodies go through a lot of changes, and your palate and preferences will change. I can’t abide sweetness now, apart from that of my pasture eggs and raw milk. First time I had beef (ox) liver, I was initially put off by the sweetness (though I still ate it), but I quickly grew used to it, and now the sweetness is quite tolerable, well masked by the eggs.

But regarding your reaction. I read something once, I forget where, about an experiment where some people who had been on strict keto then were asked to ingest some sugar/carbs, I believe it was pure glucose from some drinks they were given. And it was shown when these people were tested that there was some cell damage going on as a result of ingesting these carbs/sugars, but that when they resumed the ketogenic WOE this damage was corrected/reversed. I can’t remember though how long it took to fix the damage, sorry. My memory is pretty rubbish.
