Strange Ketone readings

(Tony Campbell) #1

Hi all.

For the last week, maybe 8 days, my blood ketone levels have dropped from 1.2-1.7 range, down to 0.2, sometimes even 0.1 mmol. Now, nothing unusual you are all thinking. He’s probably eating something he shouldn’t etc, but what makes it strange is, for the last 5 days (finishes today), I’ve been on the egg fast/feast…whatever you want to call it. That means, I’m eating eggs, and fats, plus a small amount of cheese if I want it. My common macros end up perfect for keto (I’m assuming that’s the whole idea of the egg fast) so I should be in a pretty good level of ketosis.
The other thing, my BG is up too. It’s currently at 106, over six hours from my last food!
Is it possible that my body is using all of the ketones? …
Also checked urine. Nada, nothing, no trace of ketones there either.
Now, common sense tells me that I must be in ketosis, purely because of what I’ve ingested (including good quality MCT OIL) over the last five days.
I’ve been keto for 7-8 weeks now, and up until about a week or so ago, was getting the usual ketone readings, which then tailed off.

Any ideas?

The most likely explanation, as far as our experience goes, is that your muscles have now adapted to metabolising fatty acids and are passing on the ketones, to spare them for other organs, and meanwhile your liver has cut back and is now matching supply more closely to demand. People seem to spill a lot of ketones in the period of fat adaptation, then levels of excreted ketones and even circulating β-hydroxybutyrate fall, once fat adaptation has been achieved. As long as your carbohydrate intake remains minimal and you continue to breathe in and out, it’s pretty much a safe bet that your liver is producing ketones.

I was hoping someone like yourself, with your obvious knowledge would say that! I’d looked around and then decided that it was the only thing that made sense!
Thanks Paul
