Steroid injection and Keto/weight loss

(Kelly Salazar) #1

Hi! I’m new here and I’ve been doing Keto for almost 2 months. Love it! Never felt better! I had a torn meniscus last year (June) and had surgery to repair in August 2017. It is hurting me bad and they are wanting to do a steroid injection to reduce inflammation. I was curious as to how that would affect my ketosis and weight loss?

Steroids definitely have a negative effect on weight loss. I have no idea if ketosis is impacted.

Taken orally yes, but I don’t think the injected types have the same effect.

@ksalazar if it’s painful, get it dealt with.

My shoulder was badly damaged a couple of years ago. It will probably never fully recover and is sore a lot of the time. I had one cortisone shot a few months ago. It helped the pain quite a lot, and it didn’t seem to affect me otherwise, at least that I recall. The shoulder has worsened again, so I plan to ask the doctor for a second injection at my next visit. If he agrees to administer one, I will pay more attention to the effects and will report on how or whether it affects my fat adaptation.

I didn’t realize that was the case. I do agree that it should be dealt with even if there was a negative impact with weight and it sounds like there will not be.

My glucose readings are normally in the low 80s.
Today I had a betamethasone injection (for baby’s lungs). That was at about 2:30 PM. I at supper at 6:30 PM, and when I tested at around 9:15 PM my glucose was at 145, with ketones at 1.2. At 10:30 PM I tested again and glucose was at 120, with ketones of 1.3.

EDIT (adding data):
Date ----------Time ------ BG ------ BK ------ Notes
9/2----------12:46 PM------75--------1.0------------(before lunch)
9/2----------9:08 PM------145--------1.2------------(2.5 hours after supper, 6.5 hours after steroid injection)
9/2----------10:19 PM-----120--------1.3------------(1hour after previous)
9/2----------11:24 PM-----123--------2.0------------ (1 hour after previous, snack of atkins bar)

9/3----------9:28 AM---------99--------2.6------------ (morning after deciding to actually start my day, drank sugar-free powerade)

I have to go tomorrow to get a pain injection in my C spine, I have degenerated disks and a bulging disk in my neck. I am worried how this may effect my perfect keto run. Does anyone have any updates to this topic?

I guess when you have problems with knees in general, it is not recommended running… but I’m not a specialist so… Although, I’ve heard of a case study where it was clinically proven that people with osteoarthritis of the knee had less pain and disability after one year of physical therapy. The steroid used was cortisone. So, I guess steroids are not that bad after all. I’ve been using them for some time on to grow muscles. Gladly, I’ve found where to buy steroids online from this site called muscle gear that really helped me out during the pandemic as I couldn’t continue my trainings without them.
