(Scott) #1

They covid I ended up gaining 22 lbs . Am starting again and want to know I want to try under 20 net carbs but can’t do one meal a day yet . Even for supper with chicken breast broccoli butter and spices on the chicken I am over 10 carbs . Any trick including a snack here and there . Back at work so need a lunch for work and no microwave

Well yeah, vegetables are so carby, hopefully the others will tell you how they do…
I only can go low since I don’t really eat vegetables (a pickle or a small radish may happen now and then, I put onion into my stews but that’s it on my default, carnivore-ish days). You can do this for your other meals if a single one is too carby but you don’t want to change it  Many people eat eggs with bacon for a meal, that’s not much carbs! Not even if you eat a few slices of cucumber with it
Or you can plan less carby meals. Less broccoli, the spice is hardly much but who knows about your habits…?
So, focus on your fat and protein and if carby things like vegetables are just some tiny extras, you can easily go below 10g too, 20g is a bit more relaxed but I personally easily go way over if my attitude isn’t strict… A good plan may help if you are the type who actually respect your own plans (unlike me).

Chicken breast is very lean, no wonder that meal isn’t much even with butter… By the way, I learned this from the carnivores but if I must eat lean meat, I simply use some very fatty meat as a side dish, not vegetables… Or eggs. Or cheese. Or everything at once. You still can add vegetables if you want but less…?
I can’t possibly know what works for you but try different things and find your sweet spot  It is subject to change with time, of course, I eat nothing like in the beginning.

Keeping your carb intake under 20 g/day should be enough to be going on with; you don’t need to jump into one meal a day at this point. Be sure to eat enough when you do eat. If you find yourself needing a snack, pick something low-carb and high-fat, and then have more fat at the next meal.

Here’s my current ‘at work’ meal with zero prep. Need a fridge, though. Note, the container of brie contains 6.17 grams of carbs, so for the days I eat this at work, I adjust my carbs at other meals to make sure I stay below my daily max of 15 grams. This is a ‘big meal’ for me! I notice the photo of the Hormel pepperoni says 170 grams, whereas here in Vancouver the packages I buy at Walmart are 175 grams.

Thanks not a Brie ester but could with other cheeses , I no pepperoni is high protein and fat . I want to try and stay below 20 gram carbs not net put as on the label . Just seems the fibres make a big difference in veggies etc

@jscott1967 President spreadable brei, 6.17 per container is the total carbs. It doesn’t taste like other bries, so it’s worth a try. But if you don’t like brie, there are lots of other cheeses. For example: grana padano (a parmesan) has zero carbs and more protein; plus, tastes great! It’s a bit cheaper than other parmesans as well. Also, soft Boursin Bouquet of Basil & Chives has zero carbs and a very different flavour from most other cheeses. I love cheese and consume a variety daily.

Pepperoni, pork rinds, and buttered cheese are my current favourite snacks, when needed. These days, however, snacking is more about food addiction than any real need for food, so I am working on cutting it out.

BTW, President cheeses are made in Wisconsin, and I am a cheese snob. Only real French Brie for me!

When Walmart has them I’ll go for it.

Yes snacking I’m warning off slowly. Haven’t smacked after supper in a couple days . Ps I hate pork rinds . Never got that one but most do. Part of problem is don’t sleep easy but trying

I hear you about the sleeping. I have come to the conclusion, though, that stressing about not sleeping is worse than the actual lack of sleep.

I have to turn over periodically through the night, because of damage to my arms and because of breathing issues. I’ve learned to just relax, and pretty soon I’m asleep again. If worse comes to worst, I just go over a novel I’m writing—puts me right out!

I agree with @Shinita . Concentrate on the protein and fat, and regard veggies as incidental. In other words, don’t have a salad or a full serving of vegetables, because you’re right–those carbs can add up fast. But don’t freak out about a bit of onion or the odd cherry tomato either.

Salad is no problem but I love love love cauliflower mash but will stick with cauliflower and butter and broccoli ( on different days) .
