Starting my journey on January 17th

#2

Welcome!!

(Michal Ciechan) #3

One thing that helped me starting out, was to give away all my carb food! pasta, rice, sugar, and really start fresh with a clean slate! Anyhow welcome and good luck!

(Ron) #4

Thank you for the words of encouragement!
I am actually somewhat doing that myself.

TBH I am eating though some of it, things I really want, but also a nice colony of ants has helped me by getting into a not so tightened container of honey I had in the pantry, so I threw away a bunch of sugary things that no one needs to eat.

Remaining pasta and rice and such are going to be donated. I’m on pace to be ready… I want zero bad things to tempt me… I know the first week will be difficult, but I’m convinced I can do it now.

Good on ya Rondo, welcome mate. Have you listened to the first few episodes of the 2 keto dudes podcas? And the latest episode called “starting keto”. That would be my best tip, good luck, go well.

I can remember doing that. I put it all in a food bank outside the supermarket. There was a sign saying it would be sent to the starving children in Africa. Poor buggers, all those Doritos and chocolate biscuits would probably have just made them even more hungry.

Every moment your glucose is above about 110 mg/dl you are decreasing the beta cells in your pancreas that make your insulin through glucotoxicity and every moment under 110 if you have any beta cells they are increasing through mitosis.

The problem is you can’t make new beta cells from stem cells because apparently there are no stem cells in your pancreas, so you have to rely on existing ones dividing and multiplying. Once you have too few you may never have enough to make enough insulin for you, and once you have to inject insulin it becomes a whole lot more complicated.

So the longer you are an uncontrolled diabetic, the less the chance you’ll make it back. But there is hope, I made it back after a decade of steadily worsening diabetes.

WOOO! Excellent Choice! Aside from the 2KD Podcast; I would highly recommend visiting the website www.dietdoctor.com. They have an excellent 2 week “getting started” program. They give you everything you need to get started. Recipes, daily menu, suggestions ect. It was how I got started. I recommend that and 2KD Podcast to anyone who will listen. This WOE is amazing and I cannot stop telling everyone about it. Keep Calm and Keto On!

We are adults here and this YouTube video’s title does contain some questionable language, but it does reflect the sentiment of @RondoTheHutt as well as how I felt before and after starting LCHF and then Keto.

Welcome! :bacon: :bacon: :bacon: Purging my house of tempting foods was pivotal for me when I started. Aside from removing temptations I think there was a HUGE psychological aspect of the purge. I was wiping my slate clean and starting over, a very gratifying experience. I then proceeded to spend a ridiculous amount of money restocking my kitchen with everything I could find that was keto. That was the one thing I would do differently if I could do it all again. I would be a bit more strategic about what to buy and when to buy it. Much of what I bought is still sitting in kitchen not being used. Then again, maybe the restocking of the kitchen was a key component of the experience, I dunno I do wish I would of had this resource in the early days.

Thank you Adam,

I have listened to the first 10 or so, I keep telling myself I’ll take a break once they get to a subject I don’t find interesting and listen to some of my other podcasts… but I have yet to find one and don’t see any in the near future. My brain is eating up all this information. I’ll check out the newest one, I saw it on the list, but seems I may have to skip ahead to it.

(Ron) #12

Yes, its quite alarming, especially since my “normal” BG is in the upper 200s sometimes 300+ when I eat bad (pasta or rice particularly) which is why it amazes me that I’m not missing parts… I have mild to medium neuropathy, but nothing much worse than that… I know I need to do keto for a while and get my body in ketosis first, but I definitely plan to practice IF to get and keep my insulin and glucose down, my body has many years of abuse and Krispy Kreme doughnuts to get through.

(Ron) #13

Thank you Danielle,

Actually dietdoctor.com was my very first landing from google when i started to research Keto… You would recommend their 2 week program? I’ll have to look into that a little deeper I saw it was there and looked very good, but like many things, I thought it may be too good to be true

(Ron) #14

Haha, that is great, I’ll have to share that

(Ron) #15

I am feeling that a little myself, I felt good / proud of myself tossing the bag of sugar and useless sugary things (I considered giving them away, but no one needs to eat those) Some of the things I planned to eat I’m giving away… rice, pasta, beans, etc.

I even gave away my last can of Beefaroni! I feel better doing that then I would have felt after eating it I know.

As far as restocking, I’m glad you said that, that is the route I have been leaning toward… I think I may keep a lean kitchen now that I think about it a bit… if my house is overflowing with food, I’ll be more temped to indulge, and until my appetite subsides, I need to avoid emotional eating at all costs… I eat for comfort and boredom and when I"m stressed, so I need to break those chains too… I’m sure a lot of people on here went though the same thing.

(Danielle) #16

I absolutely would recommend it. I figured I could try it for 2 weeks and if I hated it or whatever; no big deal.

You are doing a wonderful thing! You will feel empowered to finally take charge of your health and improvements begin almost immediately. I also found that depression is GONE. I second Diet Doctor’s two week intro. It’s all laid out for you, it’s free, and very achievable.

A couple of suggestions:
1). Get labwork run before you start so you have a baseline.
2) get plenty of test strips so you can “eat to your meter” even if you have to pay for them out of pocket.
3). Richard K Bernstein’s Diabetes Solution is required reading for diabetics if you haven’t already read it. It will help you work with your doctor to adjust meds in particular.
4) lay in more keto food than you think you’d ever possibly be able to eat. That gives you no excuses when you’re tired or it’s late or you are in a hurry to make good food choices.
5). Understand the keto flu and prepare for it. Don’t plan anything stressful, hard, or mentally challenging in the first few weeks. Lay low and power through. Drink lots of fluids and supplement your electrolytes.
6) understand “Post Induction Stall Syndrome” (PISS). After initial and dramatic water weight loss things come to a screeching halt. It’s normal and expected. Keep calm and keto in and real fat loss will happen more slowly and realistically but it may take a few weeks.

You are worth the effort. A brand new world is heading your way.

Awesome advice there, do it @RondoTheHutt smash that sugar diabetes, there are plenty of people here who will be cheering you on!

(Ron) #19

As soon as I read your suggestions I got Dr. Bernstien’s book on my audible account and started it (I have an hour and a half commute to work, so that is where I get most of my “reading” done… I just listened to the first bit of it, it’s all been story and testimonials, but I have high hopes it will jive with my needs.

I have been reading and I understand the Keto Flu… I’m not sure I can actually prepare for it, I feel like its going to hit me hard, but I just have to power through it.

(Ron) #20

Started today, not off the start I was hoping, but not going to let that stop me.

I woke up a little late, so I didn’t have time to cook like I was hoping, so just cooked up some bacon real fast, and grabbed a burger from my work’s cafeteria (Just the burger) It was funny seeing the look on the girls face when I said “Just take the two patties and drop them in the box” and some spinach with a little bit of Oil and Vinegar

Weighed myself when I got up, official starting weight is 294.6. I have not set a goal weight for myself yet, I will have a better idea once I lose weight and work with my doctor to see where we are both comfortable with my weight.

Tomorrow I will do some of the other things I didn’t have time for before work, such as measurements, BG levels (I know, I know, I should be checking them anyways)

I am a little over halfway through Dr Bernstein’s Diabetes Solution, and I must say, its a great book for anyone who is or may become diabetic.

The key thing is that you started! Welcome aboard the Keto train.
