Starting keto after a sickness bug?

#1

Hi, I’ve been doing some research on keto and carni diets and I definitely want to see if it works for my body.
I’m just getting over a sickness bug and wondering if now is a good time to start, considering that I’m probably some way into ketosis already? Can anyone help or share experience?
Thabks!

Personally, I would wait until you level back to your normal health. Otherwise, you won’t know what effect is keto and what is your continuing recovery.

Robin has a valid point, but on the other hand, I don’t think you would overstress your body by embarking on a ketogenic diet right away. Certainly, you could start by giving up sweets and starches, and worry about the rest of the carbs down the road.

Thanks for the info and advice. I went and had a burger yesterday. I just felt that I should check how my body responded to that before embarking upon this AMAZING keto way of eating.

Well, I’ve started keto now and I know it’s very soon but I feel amazing already! I’m fully prepared for the keto flu and other side effects of moving into ketosis and ridding my body of the poisons it still contains. I’m on such a high right now though and really wanted to share this with people who understand!
I struggle with mood swings caused by spikes and dips in blood sugar and have been beating myself up for long enough for being short-tempered etc. This is such an exciting new chapter!

Thanks for reading!

Don’t count on the keto flu. I never experienced it. Felt great from day one. You may also!

I never got keto flu either.

Should you start it know? I wouldn’t FORCE it but if it is fine for you and don’t put some too big strain on you, why not? But if you want to go keto soon, even if you don’t feel like to do it now, at least avoid the worst items. I don’t know how you ate before, I had HCHF originally and first I went paleo, then almost immediately dropped my carbs as well (i.e. less fruit and vegs than before)… And I evolved further when I was ready. Your body surely will thank you if you stop eating added sugar. Even my health-conscious high-carber SO dropped it, he hates it and it is so easy to live without it (most of the time and almost completely. it takes a bit more dedication to use 0g added sugar in the whole year but going close? pretty easy if you ask us. may be hard if someone is addicted - we weren’t, apparently so it was easy - but it passes and it’s worth it). Natural sugars should be limited too… Some of us should do it more seriously than others.

The “keto flu” as commonly understood is just a lack of salt. Keep your salt intake up a bit, and you won’t have to deal with it. Worked for me, anyway.

Some of the other aspects of going keto can’t be dodged, however. You may notice that exercising is more difficult for a while. This is because your skeletal muscles are adapting to metabolising fatty acids for the first time in a while, and so they are limping along on ketones right now. But after six to eight weeks, you’ll be back at your old performance level, with no problem.

And either get blood work done right away and use it as a baseline, or wait until you’ve been eating keto for at least six months. Otherwise, some of your numbers may alarm your doctor unnecessarily.

Thanks Paul, and sorry for the very late reply. So, I went into the carni diet straight from that sickness bug and actually didn’t feel the lethargy etc because it was already done due to vomiting etc. But then incaved and pigged out on loads of sugar. I started again last Monday (eight days ago) and am feeling tip top, even euphoric today! I jyst love being able to share this with people who understand and can join in with enthusiasm! I get pure joy now from eating, and not only due to the flavour. There’s something primal in me that lights up when I have a slab of meat in front of me (says the former vegan).

I stayed low carb and in nutritional ketosis for the 2 week duration of COVID. I did note that I felt better when I was deeper in ketosis in that time. Less all over aches and pains. I made a diarised post about the experience in the forums.
