Interesting. My body has definitely had set points over the years. I’m currently at one of its favorites. I have been bouncing the same 3 pounds around it for a solid month. I believe this theory… Hopefully I can trick it downward again.
Stalled and tweaking things
Me too! Over the years I’ve noticed my body likes a certain weight and have frequently found myself stuck at 160/165. Same as my high school weight so as menopausal 53 year old woman I’m trying to console myself with that.
That is a LOT of weight AnnLee. It’s not unusual to quickly drop large amounts of weight (including water weight) in the beginning of a keto diet but one can’t expect that rate to continue. I too hit a plateau right before Christmas and in fact my weight seemed to keep bouncing up and down so I know how frustrating that can be. I ate with abandon for a few days over the Christmas holiday and followed that up with a five-day fast. I was recently able to break that plateau (which was really satisfying) and am continuing on to my target weight.
It was mentioned here and Fung and Sphinny have more of the data but the medical and anecdotal evidence suggests that women react different then men to nutritional ketosis. If there isn’t already a topic maybe the ladies should start a more specific topic.
Yes, I realize that rate would not continue, especially since I didn’t have a ton I wanted to lose to begin with. I am happy with the weight I have lost and how it came off. If I don’t lose any more I will probably be fine with it. It just seemed quite curious to me that I would just stop losing the same time I stopped tracking my food. It may just all be coincidence, or some unknown factor. My husband thinks hormones have something to do with it, and he may be right.
I’m going to try to not think too hard about it, track my food for a while, and see what happens.
I think tracking my food is really helpful. I used to run a weight loss support group like weight watchers, (yes, it was low fat, High carb )
I encouraged everyone to track what they ate.
When I started keto a month ago I tracked nothing but carbs. Now I’m using mfp app and documenting what I’m eating. Lost 5 pounds in a few weeks. I think it just keeps me honest and helps me track those sneaky carbs. Tracking means you are reading all food labels. As with the old days of weight watchers, I don’t think I’ll have to do it forever, but it’s great to go back to it for a reboot!
I haven’t read all the responses… but I AM IN THE SAME BOAT! I have been tracking for about a month straight but prior to that i wasn’t tracking/logging still doing keto just not as strict. But my weight hasn’t changed in like 2 weeks… and I even increased my cardio, thinking that was the answer…
I also tried to create a deficit in my calories along with my cardio/weight training…I kno I should focus on inches lost and looking how clothes fit but damnit I want that scale to move lol . Especially bc I can see the fat I want to drop.
Then I’m worried I’m not really in ketosis? I’m not sure what to do. Maybe I’m not getting my fat in enough?
Welcome to the boat! I’m encouraged by stories and advice here. I too want the scale to move! But I’m going to just keep going another few weeks. If the scale doesn’t keep going down I’ll start tweaking by removing dairy for a week…no change? I’ll increase exercise, no change? I’ll start IF or give up alcohol completely! I’m not giving up! I know this will work for me one way or another. If I felt deprived, if I was hungry, etc I’d give up for sure. I’m convinced this is a healthy and safe way to eat. -and I have so much support here. Please keep updating here everyone!
Well I have a feeling I should see the scale move a little over the next week because I usually have a little “woosh” right after shark week. How fun.
Constantly tweaking and re-evaluating for optimal health and wellness.
In the beginning, I noticed that weight came off faster. But now that I’m closer to my goal weight, it’s slowing down. I feel like my body is fighting me a bit.
I think you may be right that your body may feel you have reached a weight it’s happy with, at least for a while.
But also consider the time of year. November / December is the time in which is kind of natural fit or bodies to want to pack on additional pounds to get us through to spring. At this time of year I think not gaining is a victory in itself.
Sadly the “goal weight” that our mind sets doesn’t always coincide with what our body considers optimal. We all (ok, most) think we want that perfect beach body. The fact is that just isn’t genetically achieveable for most without a tremendous amount of effort from both diet and muscle building.
Yeah, it’s the arbitrary magical number. My husband suggested trying a fast. The longest I’ve gone is 20 hours.
How long have you been at your current weight? Many report that extended fasting has helped propel them towards their goals.
How near your “ideal” weight are you. If you are nearing the low side of the BMI chart you may need to subsidize an extended fast with just a bit of dietary fat to maintain your energy levels throughout the day.
My weight has been fluctuating for about a month. I know it’s not really a stall. I’ve been really tired too lately. My goal weight is so close…5 more lbs to go. I’m actually in normal BMI range. I’m 5’1, 112 lbs.
You’re so close, you very well may have to take stronger action to get to your goal.
An extended fasting protocol may be the ticket?
I’ve been back back in Ketosis for about 1 week after a 1 week fast but my weight loss has stalled and I am actually gaining a few pounds. Grrrrr. A little frustrating. Almost back down to my pre-holiday weight before I gained 9 lbs Hard to accept that weight loss is not a linear event. KCKO!
It is for me. My early stalls were down to letting carbs creep back in, but after a long stall (nearly a year) I started doing IF and that broke it. Now I"m at the point where the only time I lose is on Extended Fasts. I don’t have that much to lose (around 5kgs) so I’m not too worried, but even with IF all I do is maintain. The only thing that will move the needle now is EF.
