Stalled and Frustrated......HELP

Look out for Leanne Vogel’s podcast too, The Keto Diet

Working out too much can raise cortisol and inflammation. You could try a few days off…

(David Cumming) #23

try fasting - I’m doing one meal a day and I’m getting results (23 hour fast, 1 hour eating)

(Brian) #24

One meal a day is really pretty easy to do, at least it is for me. A lot of mornings, I just am not hungry.

The hard part is that when supper time comes, it’s easy to think we want more to eat than we really do, and we could probably eat a little less and be completely satisfied. Still working that out.

When we first started this keto thing, I thought, dang, this is gonna cost us a lot of money to eat this way. What I didn’t realize is how much LESS food we were gonna be eating.

Good luck!

What I just read sounds like someone who is having amazing success on keto. Sometimes we tend to look at long-term processes as a snapshot in time without always having the best perspective. I’m going to throw a couple things your way, please don’t take them as harsh but sometimes you need to hear things like this:

  • A lot of people would absolutely kill to be 10 pounds from their target weight (most people honestly).

  • If you are counting exactly how many days you’ve been keto and treating it like a diet vs a permanent lifestyle change than you are completely missing the point. If 50 days feels like a lot you are not making the right meals because eating buttery steak and veggies is not a chore for anyone I’ve ever met.

  • Throw your scale in the trash, give it to someone you dislike or at the very least start weighing yourself no more than once per year.

We weigh about the same I think, I’m also about 10-15 pounds from my goal. I’ve been stalled since June, but I don’t think much of it. I lost 10 kilos (about 18 pounds, I think) during 10 weeks before my vacation, and I really think my body needs some time to adjust to this new weight. If I don’t loose any more, that’s okay too, I think  I fit a nice size in clothing, and don’t feel heavy and sluggish like I did before my weight loss. I should mention that I’ve been low carb for seven years, periodically keto. I gained my weight back when I went paleo after reaching goal weight, and I honestly think I wouldn’t have if I’d settled on a higher weight than what I considered optimal at the time. I experienced every sign of a slowed metabolism, I was cold and VERY hungry. This time I won’t be in such a hurry, and won’t beat myself up about having a few more pounds than I did when I was 20 :stuck_out_tongue:

It also bears mentioning from time to time Dr. Phinney’s observation that women have sometimes starved themselves for calories for so long, that on a ketogenic diet the body puts on lean tissue while burning off body fat. He mentioned one woman in a study where the other women lost around forty pounds, but this participant only lost twenty and got so frustrated. When they ran a body scan, it turned out that she had indeed lost forty pounds of fat, but had also gained twenty pounds of muscle. Dr. Phinney’s advice is to ignore the scale and focus on other metrics, such as your dress size.

I’m not a woman, but for what it’s worth, I have been hovering around the same weight for two or three weeks, but I notice that a pair of shorts I couldn’t quite get into three weeks ago is now falling off me unless I cinch my belt really tight. Also kind of frustrating is that to look at me, you wouldn’t see the fifty pounds I’ve lost, because it came off my butt, my legs, and my arms–the belly is still hanging over my belt the way it has for the past several years. Actually, it’s looking a bit more like an add-on than a permanent feature these days, but it’s obvious only to me and no one else. I tried comparing face photos before and now, but they don’t look different enough to post yet–argh!–even though I can see the hollows in my cheeks when I look in the mirror.

It took four and a half months to lose those fifty pounds. I wish I could lose the next fifty more quickly. (sigh)

Ha ha. Thanks Rian.
I didn’t take it harsh but direct. I swore off the scale years ago because it always upset me when it didn’t say what I wanted it too. I do feel so much better in my clothes which matters more.

I am looking for weight loss but I’m not at all feeling like this is a diet. For the first time in my life it feels like a positive lifestyle. I enjoy cooking yummy things for us to eat. I can’t imagine going back to all that sugar in my life.
I have never been over 20 lbs overweight but that 15-20 still can weigh heavy on me…literally. I sometimes lose focus and worry bout the numbers.
Thanks again for the little slap on the face to wake me up to reality. Long time success is what’s more important.

(Kerry Swarthout O'keefe) #29

Wow that’s awesome. It really is overtime that we should look at. 50 Is an awesome number. We just need to keep pushing forward.

(Kerry Swarthout O'keefe) #30

So the one thing I don’t understand is if I’m maybe not quite eating enough calories since I’m working out then how could I possibly fast and have one meal a day? I can only eat like 400-500 calories at a time and I’m full.

(Jason Fletcher) #31

What are the grams of each macro you have been eating? How Tall are you?

(Brian) #32

I don’t really have an answer to that, Kerry, other than I don’t even look at calories, ever.

So sorry I can’t offer more. Feel for ya,… a little… I still have another 60 pounds to go…

Just in case you need confirmation this will work- I got fed up with my plateau and ate HEAPS of fat yesterday. HEAPS. Waaaaaay over what I would normally eat- calories well into 2500- totally led by my appetite, I was insatiable!!! Woke up feeling absolutely fantastic, took my blood ketones and got my best reading EVER- jumped on the scales and lost 1.1kgs since yesterday!!! Plateau broken- fat WORKS  Feed your body x

These are the last few days.

(Jen) #36

Wow @MooBoom That’s amazing!

(Allan L) #37

Are you fasting? Either intermittent fasts (Only eating in a 6 hr window) or alternate day fasting (Not eating for 40 hours and then eating in a 8 hr window every other day) really helped me break through my stalls.

Never snack, ever. Only have 3, 2 or 1 meal per day. Its all about keeping your insulin stable.

Also, how many calories are you eating? When I don’t eat much for a week or so my weight loss stops and starts going up. I find the fastest way to get losing again is eat loads for a week, 3000 - 3500 cal (all keto) then fast. Switch it up, keep your body guessing, but never let it think you are starving or it will slow down your metabolism and you will gain weight no matter how much you exerciser or restrict food.
.

(Kerry Swarthout O'keefe) #38

@MooBoom I have been told to try eating more fat for a couple days and see if that helps break the stall.
@allan I am going to try the IF starting with 15 hour fast. Was reading that for women it’s better to start with 14-15 hour fasts. I’m not going to eat after 6 tonight till tomorrow morning till 9. See if I can do that for awhile and see what happens.

(Jason Fletcher) #39

What kind of workouts are you doing? Are you insulin resistant? Do you have any metabolic disorders? You are going to want to get 60 to 80 grams of protein this will depend on activity. Your BMR is right around 1400 to 1500 and 85 grams to 90 grams of fat would be good. Since you may be more insulin sensitive and your body fat %. I think is in the ideal range if you increase you fat you will gain fat % if you are doing all cardio workouts and with your protein under 50 there is a good chance you will loose weight but it will be muscle.

This is the truth, I keep trying to make it more complicated as I am at the last 8-10 for MY desired weight. My body needs time to allow this to happen, and following this very, simple plan, I know the KCKO advice is going to work.

Enjoy the bacon!

(Kerry Swarthout O'keefe) #41

Thankyou @helewisa and @shortstuff. I believe that’s exactly what I need to do. My macros have been good so I just need to push on. Keep it simple and not over think it. I fasted 15 hours last night and may just try doing that often too and see what happens.
