Spontaneous Joint Pain Stiffness Mystery

Problem: I woke up with very painful joints and reduction of mobility in them, primarily my elbows, wrists, and knees (shoulders are not as bad, but are affected). My kneese are super tight; bending past 90° is difficult, tight, and painful. The bands on the outside of my legs are very tight. I almost could not do my hair this morning due to lack of mobility and pain in my elbows. I have never experienced this before. My wrists are not overly inflamed, I can still wrap my fingers from one hand around the other wrist like I normally can. I am actually pretty concerned about the way I feel.

Background: I have been eating ketogenic for over a year. I do a lot of weight training and CrossFit style workouts every day. I have been consistent for the past two years with high volume workouts, but trained a lot before then too. One thing that has been different is yesterday/last night for OMAD I did not consume any carbohydrates (besides incidental carbohydrates in meats and broth), and let myself eat protein to satiety. It was more cheese than I usually do. I add salt and potassium every day. I usually take vitamin D and magnesium every day, but did not yesterday. I doubt that missing one day is the issue. This week I have been having beef liver every night.

Brainstorming: Is excess protein a cause for this joint pain? I am thinking that it is not an electrolyte issue. Perhaps it was the cheese? It was not so much more than I have had before though. I would appreciate anyone’s advice/input/ideas.

Imho, you need to up the magnesium. Besides leg cramps, the tendons above my heels got tight (noticeable stepping down stairs) when I lacked sufficient magnesium. I originally supplimented with 200 mg, but find I’m better off with 600 mg mag citrate daily, 400 before bedtime and 200 in the morn.

I would strongly suggest seeing your doctor. The symptoms you describe sound as though there is something wrong that needs to be checked out.
