I sometimes get confused by all the chemical names of alternatives to table sugar. Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words, so today I took this picture to imprint upon my memory why I cannot tolerate Splenda (maltodextrin and sucralose). One teaspoon of this product divided between two LARGE mugs of plain black tea this morning kicked me out of ketosis. Aargh!
Splenda = carbage
By the way, I bought this junk BK (before keto). How they can claim it’s safe for diabetics is beyond me. Lies.
Splenda Zero drops -Ingredients: Water, Sucralose, Malic Acid, Sodium Benzoate and Potassium Sorbate (to Preserve Freshness).
Malic acid is an organic compound with the molecular formula C₄H₆O₅. It is a dicarboxylic acid that is made by all living organisms, contributes to the pleasantly sour taste of fruits, and is used as a food additive.
All sweetners ,apparently, raise insulin. You may tolerate this. The yellow packets, and larger bags for baking… Don’t buy.

I was listening to a 2016 interview of Dr Perlmutter recently. He was referring to the Journal of Obesity. He said they found that artificial sweeteners have a harmful effect on the gut microbiome and increase the risk of obesity by 50%. If I run across that interview, I’ll post a link.
Yeah, finally got my hubby off that, still using stevia & pure sucralose; but I will convince him to test blood glucose next time he’s home.
I’ve been using stevia with no effect on my ketones. I recently got a bag of Swerve, but I haven’t tested my ketones after using it. From what I have read, it’s the maltodextrin that is the culprit in Splenda.
What worries me is that it says clearly on the bag–safe for diabetics. What a lie!
I drink 3 liters of drink mix with splenda most days and have zero problems
But note I can have higher amounts of carbs than most and stay in ketosis and I rarely drink it outside my feasting window ( 2 to 3 hour window and 3000 kcals ) which may blunt its effect.
It would be interesting if the problem occurs when used with little or no fat and protein
Thank you Jane, please do. He’s likely right. Doing a sweetners free week. Wish me luck.

Has anyone tried mannitol? Its the only other sugar alcohol besides erythritol that has 0 glycemic index. Just wondering what it tastes like!
ps. maltodextrin is horrid because it has the same glycemic index as sugar. However I bet you could find pure sucralose online if you wanted to try that. Sucralose isnt 0, but its like ~20 (sugar is 100)
Stay away from anything with maltodextrin and malitol. They can spike worse than sugar.
I had some “sugar free” chocolates sweetened with mannitol a while back and it gave me intestinal distress. It must have been the quantity though as I’ve had other things with much smaller amount with no issues…
Yeah that must be it. I read mannitol is only half as sweet as sugar so I imagine they have to add A LOT to get things to taste good.
Erythritol is about 75% the sweetness of sugar.
Will do Karen.
For this group the obesity risk for eating artificial sweeteners may not apply. But I am very focused on healing my gut microbiome of toxins and harmful bacteria overgrowth. So if there’s evidence that artificial sweeteners disrupt the microbiome, there’s no way I will touch that stuff. It’s like poison to me.
FYI my name is Jana (not Jane)
Frankly, I have never used artificial sweeteners. My body is very good at telling me what’s harmful. Like the first time I had one inhalation of a cigarette in high school, I never touched it again, even though my entire family smoked.
Likewise, the first time I tasted artificial sweeteners, my body warned me that this is poison.
Everything is poison technically. Its really the dose that counts.
You could kill yourself by taking a few spoon fulls of nutmeg.
Or die from drinking too much water.
Navigating poisions has been a lifestyle that keeps me on a path of ever increasing wellness. It’s just my thing.
Id say that sugar and carbs are far worse for you than sugar alcohols since thats what caused us all to come here in the first place.
That’s exactly how I use Splenda - half a packet in a big cup of tea. Never messed with my blood sugar - I kept a close eye on it last year. I guess it does mess with some people, but that one gram of carbohydrates is the least of my worries…
How’s it a lie? it doesn’t raise blood sugar, my wife and I used it a lot more than we do now being diabetic and never had a single issue with it. For that we still use it without issues. Is it being bulked with maltodextrin ideal, no, but it’s really not the end of the world in most cases unless your baking with it and using cups of it at a time. You can also use liquid Splenda which is only sucralose. What makes you say 1tsp kicked you out of ketosis? Blood ketone reading?
