Spend a week at Carl's House to jumpstart keto?

#21

I have found it relatively easy to eat keto in restaurants - as long as I do my part and don’t add more than I can get ! Most will let me order a sandwich without bread. Most have a real list of “sides” including :avocado: avocado. Most will add fish or chicken to their salads for abt 6-8$ and can often punch that in alone. Vodka or other straight alcohol with club soda and lime or lemon is just great. I think most servers now just need to be able to punch something into their computers - and they will once they hear what I am doing. And ha ha so often that starts a rap great conversation that they like themselves.

Carl, I can imagine you all going out a few nights for dinner and doing just this sort of thing !

I would definitely be interested! My husband and I came to dinner at your house during KetoFest. We really like New London, and you would be a lovely host.

(carl) #23

Well, that’s very kind of you, Brook!

It sounds like you’re hardly a beginner at keto, though. What would you hope to get out of it, other than a very nice week away in a keto-friendly environment?

#24

If I was doing this, I’d strongly consider a weekend first. Maybe add Fri and Monday as travel/arrival/departure days. Then cd see all kinds of things about such an experience for all concerned

(carl) #25

Point taken. I’ve done this before, though. I’ve lived with a family for a week giving them a jump start on Keto. It was a very rewarding experience, and there was plenty to do, learn, shop for, and cook. If you add in all of the places I know for shopping and keto-friendly chefs in my town, I think we’d have a full schedule. However, I never thought about a weekend as a trial run. That might actually be a great idea. Thank you.

Don’t discount a nice week away in a keto friendly environment! Plus you are an awesome cook!

I have been keto for about a year. My husband didn’t really get going until KetoFest. He has lost a lot more weight than I have, but neither one of us was morbidly obese to begin with. We have both done a lot of reading and listening to podcasts during that time. So you are right, we don’t need to be launched exactly. I am semiretired after 30+ years in medicine, I’d be interested in seeing and discussing what a keto retreat might look like, to see if it is something I might be interested in getting involved with from the provider side.

(carl) #27

Very good. What do you think about a weekend? Friday to Monday?

#28

For my purposes, a weekend might be preferable. For true newbies who need to go through adaptation, I think a week would be better. A weekend might be just long enough to feel like crap.

(carl) #29

Right. I’ll follow up with you by email?

#30

Sure. Do you have it, or do I need to send it? I don’t see a PM function anywhere.

I live in Texas, which is much warmer than New England. I don’t think I would be interested in going that far north until summer.

Wicked smaht!

That’s a real great point, Brook. I actually didn’t think of that. For sure. I actually didn’t experience anything much like “keto flu” when I first started this. Was there a day when energy slagged a bit ? Maybe but I don’t remember.

So maybe a full week for the true newbie. Sounds more a bit like boot camp, doesn’t it lol. Ha, yes, Brook I could also find myself interested in such an effort clinically.

So Carl, maybe sleep away seminars on the weekends for the post-adapted who would I imagine love the collegiality, the science and the tips and trips that might be shared.

And week long support for those about to go through their own “ boot camp “ no matter where they are for that.

All sounds great !

Sort of a Meat-Up slumber party for the adapted.

If you were going to eat me, you certainly would have no trouble reaching your fat macro, lol!

@carl Seriously, it sounds like a great idea, in many ways, but there are also plenty of potential drawbacks. As a former brother in a monastery where a lot of the income came from taking in guests and running retreats, I can testify that you will most likely find the whole enterprise to be both highly rewarding and rather draining. Be sure to build recovery time for yourself into the schedule, at the very least. You might find it helpful to talk to a few people who take in guests and pick their brains about what works and doesn’t work for them. You have the keto part down cold; it’s how to avoid overwhelming yourself that would worry me.

I think that is a great way to start out. Much easier for working folks for sure. Brook has a good point about not being keto adapted, a week might be better for them. But even they would benefit from learning to shop, stock a cupboard, get some recipes and have keto meals. A good starting place for anyone.

As a healthy retiree, who has been keto/lchf for over a year with a TOFI husband who is slowly cutting down on carbs, the weekend would be perfect. I’m a very good cook, but I am terrible at meal planning. I like to get in a kitchen and create. I would love to learn more of the science behind how keto reverses diabetes with my husband.

You might even have a couple of offerings? One longer for newbies and some weekends for others? Your area is very inviting in the summer and fall as well, it would be a great “foodie and education” vacation package.

I looked at this - down under - and there are a number of fasting retreats. I’ve seen Megan Ramos promote various retreats in the US recently. The format of these (from her FB posts) have been part information, educational and support. For myself, a week would be too long, but you could offer long weekend (up to 3 days / 2 nights) which would be a good mix as 7 days is a long time? Maybe for a newly starting or kickstart, 7 days might be good?

(Louise ) #38

Yes! Perfect idea :+1:t2:

(Lesley) #39

I think this is just Carl’s round about way of letting Richard know the next time he comes to stay he’s paying.

5 keto flu guests. Uhhhh. God bless you. Since we’ve all forgotten this part it would be great. Start slow for good luck. I hope you don’t get stabbed :stuck_out_tongue:
