Sous vide Or solar oven

(Katie) #21

It depends on the style and type of oven…not the sun. As long as you have bright sun…the oven is the constraint.

Now, you might know, I spend a lot of time (weeks) way out in the desert. Everything I have is portable. (I’ll show pictures). So, my solar oven for one folds up to about 6” square and tucks onto a little bag. The full sized ovens are not portable…big black boxes with fold out silver reflectors…about 3’ square and stand about 18” tall. They can cook up to 400. My little flexible all sliver oven tops out at 275… no matter where I am.

As for plastic taste…that is what she was cooking in. I have 3 different black metal pans. Depending on what I am cooking and how much. No plastic comes in contact with the food.

My understanding is that sous vide needs to cook for very long periods of time. So, I could keep the oven turned off direct sun and keep the temps down…but once the sun is low in the sky all cooking stops. No cooking after about 3pm or before 9am. 7-8 hours absolute max. At 150 degrees…nothing would actually cook.

Ah… Got it. Guess I saw “solar oven” and thought of the only one I know, ours. Which is the big black box with big silver reflectors.

Looking forward to pics.

I like the idea of a silicone bag. Have you used one?

Not yet, but I have a birthday coming up and it is on my wish list. And if I don’t get one as a gift, I may gift it to myself.

I’m getting excited to see a picture. It sounds like a nice thing to cook with over the summer, so you don’t heat up the house.

My little solar oven… first pix is it still in the bag
Next…took it out, unfolded it…then set it up

Hard to see the black pot inside…but it has black clips that go around the pan and cover to close and hold tight.

Not big enough to do a dinner party…but just the right size for two…

Today I am doing ribs… rubbed with salt, pepper, onion, garlic and rosemary

Oops…first pix didn’t load

Wow, it is so cute. Any idea where we could find one of these to buy? I couldn’t use it year round but summertime it would be a neat thing to play around with, I love playing around with food and all the accessories that go with food.

As long as you have a sunny day…you can use it year round, Just in December and January remember the day is pretty short. Probably cannot do ribs then…but stew would work fine.

It is a SunFlair. They make several sizes…this is the small one.

I think they have a website where you can get it

Remember…you need black pots for it to work
