Okay so I have been strict keto since July of this year. Only going over 20 carbs a day twice since then…I gained water weight which was expected. Then lost it back and plus some within 5 days. Well this past week I decided to test the waters and see how my body does with 30 carbs a day. I’ve done this for 4 days now. Each day I have dropped a pound. That’s 4 lbs in 4 days by eating 30-40 carbs a day. How is this happening. I don’t want to make a habit out of it…but I think somehow it’s jumpstarting my weight loss. Anyone else experience this??? Should I continue or stop it now?
Someone explain this to me?
Well, Chelsea, keep doing that then.
Somewhat more seriously - it’s such a small difference in the carbohydrates that I doubt there is any single cause at work, and especially not one attributable just to those few extra grams. Hormonal changes and electrolyte balance/water retention or release can more than mask a one pound change in a day.
You’ve got 2+ months of fat adaption behind you, and things seem to be working well, eh?
4 lbs in 4 days, though - hey, why not continue and see what happens?
The biggest part of keto is finding a way to do it that works for you, so if it works, go with it.
Net grams might be happening? Was it 30 grams or 30 net grams? And some people do better with more carbs, others must go lower.
As long as your body is handling it, and losing the weight, keep doing it till your body demands something else.
Enjoy the Journey.
@Shortstuff I have lost almost no weight since i went below 20g carbs a day, and later carnivore. Same with IF.
Yet when I was eating 30-60g carbs in 3 meals a day (v irregular and variable) i lost weight at an average of 1 pound every 3 weeks, without trying.
Trouble is, I prioritise blood glucose control over weight loss any day. So I stay at under 20g or carni, and don’t lose. I suspect physiological insulin resistance is a factor.
Exactly
we can say anything we want about keto but the indisputable thing is that keto helped us understand our bodies better. For the first time in 60 years I am in the driver seat while until December of last year I was in the passenger seat with a reckless driver.
Back during my last major ketogenic rodeo, ten years ago, the wisdom of the experts and the crowds was that there wasn’t really much benefit to going lower in carbs than you needed to go. No harm, but worth eating up to your daily or per meal carb limit as an optimum.
Could be, the wisdom of ten years is working for you. Could also be that your body was gonna whoosh one way or the other this week, and the whoosh coinciding with the increase in carbs is coincidence not correlation. Third option is the “Turbulence” Theory of Stall Busting. You crossed a threshold of carbs that jolted your system into giving up some pounds.
I guess this is where I put KCKO. Or KC30gO.
I don’t wanna do it then out of nowhere gain 10 lbs of water weight lol I’m so scared but I’m loving this progress lol it’s a tough decision. And i don’t mind the extra carbs of course;)
After two months of adaptation it’s reasonable to eat some carbs periodically for metabolic purposes. Start with one meal on the Weekend, progressing to the point of eating them up to two days per week. Most people who eat them on the Weekends find it the easiest method.
