Some serious bloating

#1

Hi! I m new here!
I m doing keto for about 7 weeks now. I started not in order to lose weight (1,6m and 48kgr) but in order to eat healthier and more! Especially more! My whole life i ve been on low calories diets and wanted to switch to something more nutritious qnd healthy.
When i started this everything was super. Eating more, eating rich whole tasty foods qnd loose weight! From 48 went to 46!!!
I eat 1300 calories and never over 20 carbs.
I gad my period in the beginning. No bloating, no pain! Great!!! More than great, divine!!! This week i m having my second…
Omg! I m super bloated! My fingers, my stomach my face! Every part of me is swollen!
I m on the third day of my period and i have all this for 6-7 days now!!
Is it going to go away?? I m freaking out cause i feeil like am 10 kilos heavier!
I take electrolytes drink 2 lit of water and more, exercise lightly, and base my food on olive oil avocado meat green vegetables, some dairy, tahini and some coconut flour treats that i myself make. I snack sometimes, cause my goal was not to loose weight since i m normal, but to eat normally and not feel bloated!
Any advice? Am i too much and unecessarily worried?

As you probably know, hormones around the period are whackadoodle, and can vary from one month to the next. I can think of a couple of things:

  • Your body is still getting adjusted to your new way of eating, and hormones will be affected

  • Some people are sensitive to dairy, so maybe try cutting back or eliminating during this time

  • Drink water on demand, not to meet a quota

  • Do your treats contain artificial sweeteners, or even natural ones? Some people are sensitive to them, maybe you are during this time.

  • Some vegetables can be gas and bloating inducing, like broccoli.

In any case, I don’t think I would worry too much about it. See how your body rebounds after your period is over and go based on that. LCHF hasn’t done too much to alleviate my period discomfort [yet], but I’m also approaching menopause. So it’s just one of those things. Sounds like you’re doing a great job with your new lifestyle and if you feel great all the rest of the time, then that’s your norm.

Yeah, i guess hormones and some food intolerance.
I consume sweeteners, cant do without some sweetness. That didnt affect me before my period…I wont give up thats for sure. I just feel very unconfortable now with this bloating and dont wanna go back to before…no more starvation…

You may have a food allergy. You could start doing an elimination diet of certain foods and see if any of it helps. Keto can uncover latent food sensitivities.

But now? Why not from the start?

Are you eating more of something than you did in the beginning? I know I let up several weeks in and started eating more low carb processed foods like brats and lunch meat. Maybe dairy? Have your eating habits really been consistent this whole time? Think back and see if anything might stand out as increased consumption and start there.
But even if you’ve eaten the same thing every day, food intolerances tend to get worse over time. You may have missed milder reactions before and now the intolerance has increased.

Well if thats the case, it sucks. Dont wanna eliminate things. Did that my whole life. Carb limit i can deal . Dairy, no. Vegetables no. Some treats , no.Hope its due to my period. If not, unfortunately not sustainable.
Thanks for the advice

Hope it works out for you. I may be completely wrong. As it so happens, my husband says that happens a lot, though I’m disinclined to believe him.

I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken . . .

@Sisi1 It may be that you are sensitive to certain things only during your time of month. If so, perhaps abstaining for a few days might be doable? Also, as the previous posters have pointed out, you are still new in ketosis, so your hormones probably have some more straightening out to do. Just ride it out, keep calm, and keto on. You are doing fine.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: You women are my heroes! I don’t know a single man who could put up with what you have to deal with every month! :+1:

Brutal experience, yet one that is common.

My best advice is to hold steady on as much pure and simple ingredients as possible, which rules out any type of sweeeteners.

As your body adapts towards burning fat and being fat adapted you are going to experience exponential fluctuations of hormones until your body adapts. The good news is that things will calm down quickly

Every month? Try childbirth :scream:

No! No! Just . . . in so many ways . . . no!

In all seriousness. I had a horrible time on the monthlies. Age 13, threw a rock through a window. Other times, got so mad my favorite restaurant wasn’t picked, I went on hunger strikes. Once the actual period hit, I got relief. Before that, headaches, blurry vision, insatiable hunger. I am assuming that is what most women go through. I miss the good times (I hate the thought of being a menopausal woman) , but I have to say, for any woman about to cross to the “other side,” it is way calmer and must less dramatic here. You feel like a rational person for the first time in your life. Trust me.

I wanna stay keto , thats for sure. I ve been starving myself for years … i ll just have to be patient, i know. I ll try cutting some stuff during that " hell" time of the month.
Its just that, at the beginning, i felt so great eating things i missed like olive oil or full fat dairy etc. I m on diets since i was 13! I know i have some sort of eating disorder and keto was an apocalypse for me! Hope it turns out good eventually…
So, patience( talking to myself)…cant do it wrong again

Here’s a suggestion: Eat more. Seriously!

The body on calorie restriction lowers the metabolic rate, hangs onto its fat store, and shuts down non-essential processes, to focus on surviving the famine. On an abundance of calories, it ramps everything up and allows excess fat to be metabolized. And it uses that abundance for metabolic and hormonal healing. If you are deliberately restricting your caloric intake, I would suggest switching to eating fat to satiety. At first, you will most likely feel as though you are overeating, but once your satiety signaling kicks in, your calorie intake will set itself at a good level. That’s the way it worked for me, anyway.

By eating to satiety, I automatically give my body calories at a rate that allows it to burn both the fat I eat and also my excess stored fat. Of course, your mileage is likely to vary, but there are plenty of posts on these forums from people who increased calories and lost weight. I lost sixty pounds this way, and after a stall caused by artificial sweeteners, I am losing again at a comfortable rate, with no other change than eliminating the stevia. I eat so that I can go hours between meals, I don’t have to count any calories (I hate that!), I get no exercise, and I’m never hungry. For me, this is an ideal way of eating, lol! :grinning: :bacon:

Thanks for the tip. Appreciate it
Its just that i dont wanna loose weight. I m 48 kg. I just wanna sent to hell all that bloating!
Today though i m feeling a little better since my period ends in a couple of days …

I have to say I agree with you Paul, not a fan of children anyway, but the thought of trying to pop one out is horrifying!

#18

Yes, it was due to hormones! The bloating went away . I m on the 5 th day of my cycle, still have my monthly friend for a little more, and all that horrible stuff is almost over. Extra weight gone as well
So , i wont freak out next time and try to cut off some veggies and dairy for that time only.
This time i was unprepared. I ll know better next time
Thank u all for the tips

The women here could probably tell you better, but my impression is that things usually get easier with time. Let’s hope next month is easier to get through!

In any case, please do let us know how you get on. It’s all grist for the mill.
