Soda Management

Roibos (red bush) tea is my fave and naturally decaf. Increasingly available in supermarkets though watch for the mixes with fruit flavors unless you like that sort of thing (sacrilege to a Brit).

I was addicted to Diet Mountain Dew, drinking up to 12 cans a day. I’m also highly insulin resistant which may make matters even worse.

When I started Keto, I tried to just limit myself to 6 cans a day. I still had success, although my ketones were never above 0.6, and usually around 0.2. After a couple of months I did a few things to clean up my diet.

  • I dropped Diet Mountain Dew, and almost all use of artificial sweeteners.
  • I reduced the amount of protein I was eating. I think I was over doing it in the beginning.
  • I increased the amount of fat I was eating. I don’t think I was getting enough.

I don’t know which of these (or maybe all) made a difference, but after these changes my rate of progress was very much improved.

My advice is start making the changes you can. If something seems too big to tackle right now, wait until you are ready. However, this approach requires that you continually monitor your progress and evaluate if improvements are necessary.

In the end I like @meganjramos saying, “Progress not perfection”. Doing what you can do is better than doing nothing. Just remember that more improvements later may be necessary to maintain results.

I love lemon or lime in my soda stream too. If any of you like cucumber it is a refreshing addition to the soda stream. Peel (I also de-seed it) and drop a slice into the bottle.

While I mostly drink water or seltzer now, I did go through an infused water phase. I took organic cucumbers and let them steep in a half gallon of water, chill. Berries and other fruits work too of course watch the carbs.

Dr. Nally talks about DS. Not all sweetners are the same. I think he like equal as being the least insulingenic (whatever Diet Dr. Pepper has and I think regular Diet Coke (not zero but not sure). Since I gave up diet soda years ago (an appliance manufacturer told me to use some to get rust off when I called for warranty service) I did not pay that close attention when he spoke about it. I do drink the occassional Bai
