So I go these keto works samples in the mail today from my cousin, and I was hoping to find it if anyone had any experiences to share about the products before I try them. I’m a type 1 diabetic, so I’m very sensitive to crappy carbs and don’t like the insulin spikes or the bg spikes they bring. Not to mention carb cravings. So please share any info anyone meat have. Thanks guys
So I got some 'keto' samples from a cousin
It’s called keto works. The packets are unspecific, and since it was my cousin I also have hand-labeled samples from her personal stash. I believe it’s related to that it works stuff.
Ah, so it is exogenous ketones? I have listened to many podcasts about adding this. It seems to be met with mixed reviews as to whether there are benefits. You can always try it for a bit and see if you feel better with or without. It might be a good fit for you or you may find there is no real benefit to off set the cost or the addition to your day. I would love to hear about your experience with using it if you decide to try it.
I found some nutrition facts and the product seems ok. I tried it and no bg spikes so far. I can’t check for ketones yet, no meter due to budget, but I’m definitely more alert and thinking clearly. I’m considering adding some ketones for supplementation because I’m so thin, and have to eat large amounts to keep up with my metabolism. I’ve also heard mixed reviews on exogenous ketones, but I figure if it works for me, why not, right?
I see no need for a T1 to consume exogenous ketones. You would get all the same benefit and more from fat sourced from whole foods.
Only thing I know they make is ready to go bulletproof coffee. Most likely what it is. They supposedly get pretty good reviews. Don’t think you have to worry about insulin spikes being a T1D though.
I meant more having to use more insulin lol, and I agree I could get good ketones from more fat, the problem is I can’t eat that much food. I’m full. I crash hard though, and I think I’m burning through all my fuel when it happens. Haven’t cashed yet today though, so I’m thinking these are ok.
If you go to their site they’ve got a whole line of products, and they seem legit. I don’t want to sound like I’m advertising, but it’s pretty easy to find them on Google. Each product had a spread sheet with nutrition facts and ingredient lists attached. I was skeptical at first, but I don’t think these guys are going in uneducated. The ingredients are ok, and I’m pretty strict about what I’ll do vs what I won’t.
Welcome to the forums!
I suspect that as you become fat-adapted, you will no longer need to take exogenous ketones. But when you say you “crash,” what do you mean? If it’s a hypoglycemic episode, you probably need to get your doctor to lower your insulin, since you’re no longer consuming as much carbohydrate. A couple of Type I’s whose talks I’ve seen on YouTube said that they pretty quickly were able to cut back on their insulin and just rely on the bolus dose. As you heal, you should find your glucose staying well within the normal range, neither too high nor too low, which means that your need for insulin with drop significantly.
No the hypos are gone now, I’ve fine tuned everything and stay between 60 and 120 almost nonstop. I mean I get tired, and hit a wall around 3 or 4 in the afternoon. It’s really started to clear up recently, but I thought the extra ketones might help while I get more adapted. I worked for a whole year on Dr b’s formulas and used them to get all my doses just right. I’ve been 100% in range according to my routine checks. I’ve also quit consuming so much caffeine during the day, so that may be it. Used to drink two or three sugar free Rockstars a day. I’ve gone without for two weeks now
Sounds as though you’re on the right track, then. Perhaps just give it a bit more time. If you’ve been working with Dr. B’s formulas, then you know what you’re doing, so good on you! And yes, cutting back on caffeine might be having an effect, but also, you might just need a bit more fat? At 9 cal/g, it’s a really good source of energy. Anyway, you sound generally fine, just needing to tweak things here or there. Good luck, keep on ketoing on, and do let us know from time to time how you’re getting on.
I’m keeping calm lol. I appreciate the discussion. Thanks to everyone for the help and the thoughtful questions.
