Sneaking Up On Maintenance - Any Suggestions?

#21

I grew up in the day where your ideal body weight was 100 pounds if you were 5 foot tall and 5 pounds for every inch over that. So, at 5-1, my ideal weight was 105, which was pretty close to what I weighed through high school and college. I still mentally calculate what people “should” weigh using that formula.

The newer guidelines, including BMI, are much more liberal. At 128 pounds, I’m in the “normal” range, even though I could still easily lose another 10 pounds and be nowhere near too thin. At 105, though, I probably would be too thin, although that’s what my mom weighed for many years. But she was also a smoker and, of course, I’m bigger boned( aren’t we all lol?)

Naiman makes that argument, as do the Eades. The Protein Power guideline was a minimum amount of protein based on your lean body mass and activity level. There was no maximum. Being an old fogey brought up in LCHF in the 90s and 00s, I view my “macros” as requirements. You must not exceed X carbs, you must get at least X proteins, and your fat is your problem, but don’t fear it. That is definitely the camp of the Eades, Naiman, and Bikman.

OMG I was going to start a thread about this and didn’t. My mom told me this when I was younger and I spent my 20s thinking I was overweight because I was 124lb instead of 115 (I’m 5’3). Damn it I would love to be at 124lb now in fact I would prefer it over 115. I want to have muscle and lean body mass. Not just the absence of body fat.
