Snacking... A new meaning to me

#1

I told the wife that I was going to make a Topic of this, since I’ve spoken on it quite a few times, and to a few different folks just recently. - Most recently, just last night with the Wife. My Son was present for this as well.

I was explaining that basically the term, “SNACKING”, has taken on a whole new meaning for me since going Keto. (LCHF) … Before switching over to this WOE/WOL, ‘snacking’ (at least to me) meant the act of eating something, and this was basically always defined by the ‘Type’ of food being consumed. - i.e., watching a game or movie, and eating something like… Popcorn, peanuts, cookies, crackers, chips, etc., etc. basically what most folks have always considered to be just that… ‘Snack Type Foods’.

But since going Keto, I no longer see the term ‘Snacking’ as being defined by the type of food being taken in, but the ‘manner or timing’ in which it is being consumed. (Basically anytime that’s not a designated mealtime) - Meaning, that this can now be anything. Not only the items mentioned above, but also other stuff, including meats or even liquids. … For me, I now see snacking as eating anything, anytime I’m not consuming an actual full-fledged meal. So in this, I pretty much eat all the things I choose to consume, (Though I do try to keep them Keto-Friendly) I just make sure to consume them along with a meal. Which then makes it part of the meal itself and not necessarily a ‘snack’. … But again, I still try not to over-eat too much of anything that’s not as friendly for folks doing LCHF, or that is too carby in general. Or certain stuff, such as Dairy, or Sweeter items (even if created with sweeteners, other then sugar) Because I think needs to be done conservatively and only occasionally, as this in itself can keep that sweet tooth around, which can be harder for some folks who have issues staying away from the sweeter things of this nature.

Again, just my opinion on this subject…

It’s funny how even on keto, habit can overrule hunger sometimes when it comes to snacking/drinking coffee etc. For example, I sat down to watch ‘The Christmas Chronicles’ with the family the other night (great movie btw) and really felt the urge to snack on something whilst watching the movie even though I wasn’t really hungry. Ended up eating half a bag of pork rinds.

But besides that, snacking in our household has always been just the act of eating between major meals and not specifically defined by what the food was. We’ll always be cutting chunks of cheese off for a snack or having salami wrapped gherkins etc, but maybe that’s just my European heritage coming through.

I hear you Dave - it is so weird that I don’t eat every hour any more. I work at home so have 24/7 access to the fridge. But my big victory is I can ignore it now. I used to eat crackers before bedtime and then wake up at 4 in the morning to drink two glasses of milk and eat more crackers. I was like a robot snacker, or a sleepwalker snacker. I love that keto has loosened those bonds for me.

Just watched it with the Wife the other night, and it wasn’t bad indeed. … And yep, can understand about them ‘old habits’ thing. … Just something that seems to get ingrained from the repetition over the years.

Totally agree. Before, snacking was something I would do out of habit… after work because it’s a few hours before dinner or a few hours before bedtime because it went well with TV, a movie or surfing the internet. And the worst type of snacking was boredom snacking… knowing I had a family sized bag of Lays chips in the pantry made me want to go get them and eat them. I would empty a fat bowl full and try to put them away, but would find myself heading back for more.

Now snacking is something I do while I am making dinner… some macadamians or pork rinds to calm down my eagerness to eat a good keto meal. It makes me put a better sear on my steak, saute things a little crispier and clean everything up (dishes, stove etc) before I sit down to eat. I hate cleaing up after dinner so I do 95% of it before I eat.

I was just complaining to my husband the other day that I actually miss snacking. It was definitely a pleasurable thing for me. Now, keto meals are so satisfying, I no longer feel the urge to eat at other times.

It’s great that others can snack, but I don’t think I can.

I’ve proved time and again that snacking is one slippery slope for me. (There are others.) A few almonds becomes a few more, etc. Maybe not today, but soon.

I’ll eat pork rinds, but as a meal, or a major part of a meal. Same with cheese.

Sometimes I feel really hungry outside of regular meal times (usually because I’m very tired or stressed). Like today for example. I had to think carefully about it and make a conscious decision. I had a measured amount of cheese. So it wasn’t a fun food at all; I think of it as an extra meal.

If I want a bit of a treat, I have some cocoa powder in hot water, with some added stevia and a bit of cream. Can’t get into too much trouble with that–as long as I don’t put whipped cream on it.

I agree with Laurie – I feel I’ve adjusted really well with keto to not needing to eat between meals now. I was a crazy snacker, I think I found any old excuse to be grazing throughout the day (and night) and had the physiology to show for it. I think for me, I had so many bad habits (possibly disorders) with regards to eating that snacking was yet another part of all that mess, and not just something I was doing like “normal” people and is different now that keto controls my appetite.

A “snack” for me these days is something I might eat while in the process of making a meal, e.g. if I’m roasting some chicken thighs in the oven I might have some pork rinds and cream cheese, or some macadamia nuts, etc. I found the reason I do this is it’s otherwise too easy for me to make a snack become an unplanned meal in itself. That way, if I like what I’m eating and am tempted to eat more than I planned, I have a full meal coming up shortly that will stave that off.

The other trick I employ is to only eat such things when other people are around. My daughter just the other day said, “Daddy are you sure you want to eat all that jerky? Alexa [I use the timer] will say your dinner is ready soon!” It helps keep you in check.

Wow. What a risk. Kurt Russel as Santa? But it really paid off. Best character ever.

Then the big reveal. I’m sure Ms Santa was supposed to be a surprise, but I knew it had to be her. :sunglasses:

Now, now… - Same here, but no Spoilers! That would put you on the naughty list!

I use to snack all evening. One of the huge changes in my life was to only eat 3x or less a day. I too have a tendency to eat a 1/4 cup of nuts with cheese as I am cooking dinner, but really it’s just an appetizer.

Snacking has changed meaning for me as well, just because I was always eating it was never a snack, snacks were types of food not timing.
