My husband is convinced that since he started keto he’s had problems with his contacts being unclear/smudgy. Anyone else have an issue with this or is he making this up? Lol
Smudgy contact lenses
Can’t remember which keto forum it was but I remember a few people saying they had to change their glasses prescriptions because their eye sight changed for the better after ketoing for a few months. Maybe keto is clearing up his vision a bit, the contacts are not correct for him anymore? Might be worth looking into. Never saw anyone complaining about keto making their eye sight worse.
Or maybe, just maybe his hands had too much fat on them while handling them, so the smude is grease?
Hey, it could happen, ya know?
I literally just got this years eye tests done last week and had a (slight) improvement. I’ll take it!
There is also a thread about keto and dry eye which I could see being related to smudgy contacts
I had the same, something about my vision wasn’t quite right. Went to see the optician and my eyesight had improved - got some new lenses and all was clear again.
One consequence of high blood glucose is the reduction of water in the eye, which can change vision. If this has happened then going on keto can cause your eye to restore to a healthy state. This will generally improve vision, but may cause any contacts or glasses you have to become too strong for you new eye shape.

Very interesting everyone. We have eye appointments this week so eager to see! (No pun intended).
As others have postulated, may be a change in refraction due to tightening blood glucose control, hence his contact lenses may now be either over or underpowered.
May also be a symptom of dry eye.
I have also had trouble with contact lenses since starting Keto. I can clean them and they are fine for an hour or two then smudge again. I don’t know if this is dry eye or something else. Vision is fine once I clean them…
I too have been having this issue for the last 2 months or so. I wear gas perm contacts and I put them in and can see fine, and within an hour I have to take them out to clean them and rewet them becase they seem smudgy and I cant see focused. It seems more noticable in my eye with astigmatism and I didnt realize all of this started when I started my keto diet. Im hoping theres some solution for the dry eyes/contact trouble. Because I am literally blind without my contacts and I am loving my keto diet. I dont want to go without either. Suggestions or help anyone???
You might want to get your eyes tested - I was having similar issues, lenses were uncomfortable and vision not quite right.
My optician swapped me into some ‘wetter’ daily lenses and found my shortsightedness had improved. -3.25 prescription I’ve had for the last 20 years had shifted to -2.75 in both eyes.
I am fairly sure this is due to protein deposits on the lens. I am going through this as well. My thought is that I may need to switch to daily lenses rather than monthly. Stay tuned!
I don’t wear contact lenses (glasses only) but can you give your monthlies a wash and remove it or is it stuck in the lens once you get them? I remember protein build up on mine when I wore them but that was way back when you soaked them overnight and had that swishy thingy.
You’re absolutely on the right track! I called my eye doctor today and his office recommended Clear Care found in the eye care area of any pharmacy. Clear Care is exactly what you described – you must soak in this small contraption for a minimum of 6 hours in order for it to neutralize. It would otherwise burn/damage your eyes, but at the end of the 6 hours, the protein deposits are removed.
My only issue is this… I’ve had a new pair in my eyes for only 2 hours while the other pair is processing… and there is already smudging on one of my lenses which is disheartening. I would be really bummed if I ended up with glasses full time because I’m going keto full time. I may need to bite the bullet and finally get the laser surgery.
