Sludge in Urine

(Ehlert P Lassen) #1

I just completed my third 10-day water fast. I’ve been consuming water, a couple cups of coffee/day, tea (about three cups over the 10 day period), and the occasional mixture of raw apple cider vinegar with baking soda and water.

At the end of both my previous 10 day fast and this one, I’ve peed a heavy sludge. Today was the second time. It didn’t hurt when it happened although I could feel a difference from a regular pee. I wondered out loud to my wife if I had a UTI. She laughed and said we’d all know it if I did. I can’t seem to find any relevant info online that addresses this. Does anyone here recognize the phenomena?

I began eating Thursday morning. My next 7 day fast begins Monday morning.

Best wishes,

Ehlert

Hi Ehlert.

The sludge should be examined. Urine sludge can have different components. When I’ve examined urine samples (I am not a human doctor), there is quite a bit of debri. The interesting components are the cells seen.

For example, inflammatory cells may indicate inflammation somewhere in the urinary tract. Inflammatory cells and bacteria together can indicate an infection. Red blood cells can indicate trauma.

The other interesting part of urine sludge is whether there are crystals present. Different crystals indicate different processes. Dumping oxalate crystals can occur when high oxalate foods are excluded from the diet (search ‘oxalate dumping’ in these forums). The way I recognise the described phenomena is in the context of cloudy urine with oxalate crystal dumping. Struvite crystals are often associated with a bacterial cystitis or urine of increased alkalinity.

I reckon get the sludge checked by a pathology laboratory and you will find answers, or more clues to ask clear questions (less sludgy :slightly_smiling_face:), if needed, of your physician.

Hi Frank,

Interesting subject, oxalate dumping. Approx 5 years ago I had a severe bout of kidney stones and was told by the doc to lay off of spinach, et al. Prior to that I had been downing vast amounts of spinach and kale in smoothies thinking I was been healthy. Upon analysis, the doc told me that I was susceptible to build up of oxalate.

Every so often I do a round of carnivore diet.

Next time I experience the dumping I guess I’ll scoop some up and send it to analysis.

Thank you for your insight and suggestions!

Ehlert

Agree. Have it checked by a doctor.

Thanks

Bile duct blocked by gallstones.

Google it.

Thanks! Five years ago I did have some gallstones removed. What was puzzling to me in all this is that the sludge events both occurred at the later part or right after the 10-day fasts. So my first thought was that there might be a connection.

It HAS to be! That’s a weird one alright.
