Hi All, wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I’ve been keto and fasting for 10 weeks and maaaaybe can say 6 pounds down today. This is by far the worst result I’ve had on any plan and was expecting much better considering the science. I’ve now quit all alcohol, and done two three-day fasts and just not getting anywhere. No health issues(that I know of), perfect BG and showing ketosis 24/7 on stix. I’m familiar with everyone’s stories about breaking a stall but I haven’t even started yet!
Slooooow weight loss
Have you been fasting the whole time? Generally, you’d want to focus on becoming fat adapted prior to starting fasting. If you start fasting too soon, especially depending on what your macros are, it ends up just being caloric restriction and your metabolism will slow to meet what you’re taking in.
Mmm…well really alternating IF, OMAD and fat feasting since 1/10 so I would think by now I’d be ok. I did get quickly addicted to the fasting tho and thought maybe I did a bit too much too soon, but just like 16 to 23 hours mostly. Just did the 2 72-hour fasts in the last week. I have felt great, no hunger, enjoy eating and enjoy not eating but geez I thought I’d see some scale movement by now. Without “keep calm and keto on” running through my head, I’d have given up by now. I think this HAS to work, right?
It’s possible the fasting is preventing you from becoming fat adapted. I’d try a little reset. Try going back to 3 meals a day, keeping the carbs less than 20g, moderate protein, and focus on fat. Whenever you get hungry, eat fat.
Once you’ve reached a fat adapted state, then your appetite diminishes and fasting becomes natural, and your body looks to stored fat for energy while fasting.
Without getting to that fat adapted state first, your body is still just waiting for food to come in and doesn’t yet recognize stored fat as available energy.
It really does Tina. Imagine how I felt this second time around with keto. I gained 6 lbs the first month. So with the 10 lbs regain that put me at 185 in January. But Iistened to the Dudes, and the keto woman podcast and kept it pushing. I lost the 15 plus a few more down to 173 about 10 lbs from my goal weight. Sometimes for us it can be slower. But stick to it. Remember the basics. Keto does work.
Extreme measure but try eating as much as possible but less than 10 NET carbs ,thats how I got fat adapted and did that for a week only
Except I dont really fast but I dont eat after 6pm and till the next morning 7-8am from my coffee and maca milk
Thanks. I have lost 2" in my waist, which is good, but with 50-60 pounds on me, I would expect much more would have gone by now.
I don’t eat any carbs except incidental. High fat, feasting days and fasting days, pretty unbelievable.
Fat loss is non-linear. Your scale can only tell you how much your entire body weighs in Earth’s gravity, and how is that useful? Keto is not just another yo yo diet plan, it’s a lifestyle. Your fat loss is YOUR fat loss and can’t be compared to anyone else no matter how much science, results, or articles you read. Scale obsession causes stress which raises cortisol. If you are committed to being and staying keto, then truly it’s about keeping calm and ketoing on. If that means putting your scale away, so be it. The keeping calm part is not just two words, it’s an instruction. Your fat loss goals shouldn’t be causing you to not be calm.
I agree with others, go back to the basics. Less than 20g net carbs, high fat, moderate protein. When hungry, eat something with fat. Give that a good couple of weeks. Only eat when actually hungry (no matter how much that ends up being) and listen to your body. Get your electrolytes and water. Your body will naturally fast for certain periods. Once you hit a point where you realize that you didn’t have to eat when usual, then try to move your fasts to things like 16/8.
I’m a data junkie. I track weight, macros in my food, different measurements - neck, chest, waist, belly, hips, thigh, above knee, wrist, forearm, and bicep, and body fat percentage. I have a new scale that will track it for me. I was using the navy formula which uses weight, age, and measurements to determine that.
The biggest thing I noticed was when I had my macros right, I was losing fat and gaining muscle mass at the same time! Remember, muscle weighs more than fat, and the scale alone won’t tell you anywhere near the whole story.
Thank you. I am never hungry, or easily can ignore it so that’s really not an issue. I will try a week of no fasting to see if it was too much out of the gate but I’m pretty stumped.
Dr. Phinney’s experience, which he shares in one of his lectures on YouTube, is that women who have restricted calories sometimes find that when they start eating LCHF their body puts on lean muscle mass, because it is finally getting enough energy to do all the things it needs to do. He mentions one study participant who only lost 20 lbs., when all the other women in the study had lost 40. But a scan revealed that she had in fact lost 40 lbs. of fat, but had also gained 20 lbs. of muscle at the same time. If your body now has a higher percentage of lean tissue and a lower percentage of fat, then I’d call that a win, regardless of what the scale is saying.
Also, not all scales are that accurate—purely for fun, I weighed myself five times in a row this morning, and the weights I got ranged from 193 to 204, all within the space of about five minutes. That’s why I stopped worrying about my weight and rejoice in how my pants fall off unless I keep drilling new holes in my belt.
Yes! It’s taken me 7 mo the to lose 41 pounds. I keep at it thought because I have lost 41 pounds!
Ok, one full week with no fasting, except accidentally like sleeping in late and eating with the family late in the day. Feel good but I felt good before. Up one pound, don’t care. Interestingly, my ketones were higher than ever before yesterday. Have only seen those numbers in my three-day fasts. My biggest concern at this point is knowing when I’m fat adapted. Everyone says you’ll just know. I am literally never hungry so that’s not going to be a marker. No hunger before keto, no hunger now. I’d really like to get back to fasting but as far as the scale goes, seems I’ve wasted the last two months being counterproductive.
