Sleeping - help

(Teri Raia) #1

Just had a question if anyone else has trouble sleeping. Started Keto in July and for 2 weeks I would just lie in bed, not sleeping. It was not that unpleasant, anxious state that I used to have, before Keto, but I just don’t sleep. This resolved after about a month and I was getting better sleep but over the holidays I was not doing Keto. Only gained about 3lbs and I am back on the Keto train, but am dealing with the not sleeping again. Any suggestions on how I may get a better nights sleep while getting Keto-adapted. would be greatly apreciated.

Do you drink coffee? If so how much and at what times?

Many people find they sleep a lot less on keto, as long as you’re not waking up tired you’re probably fine. From what you’ve said though it seems it’s a stress /anxiety triggered thing. The cocktail of Magnesium, Melatonin, 5-HTP and PharmGABA does wonders. It’s more or less a copy of Doc Parsleys sleep remedy.

So I kind of had the opposite problem, I was a hard core insomniac before keto. I used to wake up about two hours after going to sleep like clockwork. I would end up eating some crackers or toast and after a bit would get tired and sleep more. I had no idea it was carb/sugar addiction waking me up with “restless limb syndrome”. It continued during the first couple of weeks eating keto but started to go away. I found that most nights I didn’t need any ambien to fall asleep. Now I usually sleep a solid 6 hrs. before I wake up. Your body will change and adjust for the better if you stick with it. But time as they say is the great healer, especially true eating keto.

I drink 2 cups of bulletproof in the morning and then just stick to herbal tea. Thank u for the reply.

Dr. Berg has a sleep supplement but it is really expensive. I was hoping that I could just buy the supplements to keep the cost down.

Do u just buy the supplements individually?

Yup! The real thing is like $60, I buy most of my stuff from Vitacost, much cheaper than stores typically.

I’ve not tried weighted blankets but I noticed some folks here in the forum saying how much the liked them. I found an article that was based on sleep studies using the weighted blanket. Maybe worth trying?

Four out of five study participants said they liked the weighted blanket. Those in this group slept longer and spent less time awake in the middle of the night while using the weighted blanket, sleep testing showed. Study participants also said they found it easier to settle down to sleep with the weighted blanket. Plus, they reported getting better sleep and feeling more refreshed the next morning.

Personally, I am not sure if this is for me. For one, I don’t have trouble sleeping and two, I can’t get used to the idea of something weighted, atop me.

Try 5-htp… Your body was used to de carb highway that brings seretonin to your brains. Melatonin (sleep hormone) is formed out of that. Seretonin can’t pass the blood brain barrier without shots of glucose. 5 htp bypasses that, it can pass the barrier and your brain makes serotonin of it. If you can’t sleep after a few weeks with 5 htp you can try taurin. Taurin balances neurotransmitters in your brain and puts down the over activating effect of the glutamine… Are you eating enough salt? If you eat to less your adrenaline becomes higher and that can disrupt sleep patterns too.
