Six weeks KETO/OMAD...lost 19.5 lbs

(Niamh) #1

I’m an early 50s, mom of six teenagers who never struggled with weight until I hit my 40s. I’m 5’ 2, 5’3. Was a huge runner in high-school, semi runner in college…and now I do the occasional hikes with friends on weekends.
My weight loss isn’t obvious to those around me as I can fluctuate a lot based on some long hikes that I take about every 18 months. I’ve hiked several month-long trips in Europe (Camino) and three years ago hiked 1,100 miles through France and Spain with five of my kids and came back 40lbs lighter. However I always gain the weight back, rather quickly…and truely have found I am drawn to carbs.

My blood levels were/are awful from what I can tell so my post number two will be inquiring about lab results and advice.

I have been pleasantly surprised how I have been able to pretty much turn off my cravings on this diet.
I am also more determined than ever to succeed. I don’t discuss with it anyone as I find this more of a personal journey and not wanting to hear anyone’s thoughts or ideas. I seem good with that at the moment. The family is supportive. My mind and energy without a doubt are better than before this diet

I don’t have Facebook, Instagram, etc… (never have) so even registering for this forum is a little edgy for me. My technical skills are minimal. I was won over to join the community by reading the remarkable responses of the community in education and assistance to each other. I must admit the thread of Dog pictures really won me over, and the food on Karen’s (Keto four numbers behind it) food images! I’m new to listening to podcasts, searching Youtube, and find myself replacing music with podcast now. Six weeks ago I’d listen to podcast and just wanted the meat of the topic/conversation and now appreciate the pace and content of all that is shared.
My single biggest internet influence in this journey is from a simple Youtube channel of a mom about my age and her progress that goes by OMAD Caroline. She gives a weekly weigh in and speaks honestly about errors, emotion etc… I like that the progress is true once a week.

Through other channels I’m now interested in fasting and changing things up.

I started Keto the day before Thanksgiving and was on vacation in New Orleans at the time. I survived Keto in New Orleans only to cheat once with a slice of Key Lime pie on about day 6. That’s it, outside of that I’ve done OMAD with Keto for the six weeks.

I have a chart hung up in my bathroom divided into Q week weigh-ins on Wednesday (though I admit I weigh every day). This is in addition to my Happy Scale app and my Garmin app on my phone.
The data I put there is
Q week weight on Wednesday
The change from the week before
and a calculation of the average weight loss each week up until this time (which I think will benefit me in accepting small loss as it comes)

So I have

Weight QWed Loss this past week Average loss a week so far
174.4
168.5 5.9 5.9
164.4 4.1 5.0
161.3 3.1 4.3
159.0 2.3 3.8
157.1 1.9 3.46
155.3 1.8 3.18

Thank you for this wonderful community,

Great news!

Then you will!

Smart.

Check out dietdoctor.com. Tons of information (written and video), readily understandable, and you don’t have to buy anything or subscribe. They don’t ask for your personal information. Truly wonderful site and a genuine public service.

Good luck on your journey.

Sounds like you are off to a great start!

I don’t discuss my keto journey also as I don’t need support from my friends and likely would just get a lot of pushback. But the support from my husband has been outstanding and I really appreciate it.

Week 7 only dropped .2 pounds but not massively discouraged.
Don’t let me fool you, there are moments I’m really not happy with this, but trying not to be discouraged is the more accurate way of describing it.
I forgot who to give credit to but someone here said something like “your body knows what its doing”.
So .2 pounds lost this week, my first week opening my window of eating vs OMAD, still under 20 net carbs though.
So at seven weeks thats an average weekly loss of 2.75, which as expected gets smaller and smaller with each week.

You may go several weeks with no weight loss as your body heals. Totally normal.

This is a marathon, not a sprint. And definitely not a “diet”. Just keep trusting the process and enjoying the extra flavors you get with the added fats in your diet and KCKO

If you are discouraged, try to eat more delicious food to keep you satisfied and the cravings at bay. I think 2.75 lbs./week is a great average. Please do not assume that your weight loss will be at a diminishing rate of return. You will have some weeks where you lose a lot and some weeks where you don’t. The key is over time, you will get to where you want to be.

It’s not for everyone, but I stay off the scale completely until I go to the doctor’s. I just went and had my weight checked, and I don’t go back until May. That is soon enough for me. I cannot tell you how liberating it is not to weigh yourself. What does the number mean, anyway - weight can fluctuate by the hour or day. A better gauge is how you look and how your clothes feel. If you plan on being on keto for a long period, just eat as you need to, keep the carbs low, stay off the scale and enjoy all the other benefits - eating great while losing weight, feeling better, wearing new sizes, etc.

Good luck.

“Ease on down , ease on the down the road…”,after my weekly weigh in this is my song stuck in my head.
WEEK 8, was at first doing OMAD until about a week ago, I’ve opened my window some and leaning way more into meat as I think the veggies stall me some. I’m much more of a veggie (and carb) girl, but embracing this. Thank you to the forum member (Don Q , I think) who recommended Herring, I like them!!! I do an avocado daily, I can’t give it up. And the Three pigs brand pate has become my “ice cream”…a serving apres dinner…

At eight weeks I have dropped per the scale , 22.0 pounds. this week was a 2.7 drop, last week was only a .2 drop (veggies I think).
It still leaves me a weekly average weight loss of 2.75 over these 8 weeks.

This forum is the GREATEST!
Thank you for the tremendous sharing of information.

Week 9: I have lost since the day before Thanksgiving, 9 weeks to the day 25.1 pounds!
That’s a 3.1 lbs drop this week.
I needed this as I felt like the veggies in my diet were slowing down my numbers. I’m not OMADing as much, more IF, but this week I was pretty strict with eating mostly meat and my daily avocado.

Congrats, that is really great =).
