I was told if I’m trying to lose weight I shouldn’t be taking MCT oil
Shouldn't be using MCT oil for weight loss?
That is correct. You want your body to burn its own fat and produce ketone.
I used it in the beginning when I was figuring everything out, but then found that I didn’t need it especially since I use coconut oil. Its not necessary really.
You use MCT like you would any other fat - to keep you full. I might occasionally use my bottle when I need to make my coffee an extra fatty if I don’t have time to cook lunch in the morning.
It is a quick burning fat analagous to sugar being a quick burning carbohydrate. Many put it in their coffee seeking a boost in energy.
That could be a good use for it. Compare jogging with and without and see if it makes any difference for you.
Yes, for keto, MCT is our equivalent to pure sugar. Little to no metabolism needed, and gets put to use right away as fuel/energy. Closest semi-natural (highly refined) food to exogenous ketones I believe. I find it helps me wake up on particularly sluggish mornings, but isn’t always necessary. The biggest difference I’ve found is that MCT oil doesn’t keep me awake if consumed before bed, but your mileage may vary.
The marketing push behind it is overwhelming which leads many people to misunderstand its purpose, so just know that it isn’t necessary for good keto weight loss results. You get some MCTs in regular coconut oil anyways, plus the lauric acid which is good for many things upon conversion to monolaurin in vitro.
I see you mentioned IF as well, so remember that MCT oil is still fat, so it will break a fast, even all by itself. I’ve also seen IF proponents say that fasted cardio is best for fat loss, so unless you’re going on long distance jogs, it might be doing you more harm than good towards that goal.
Make sure it doesn’t cause any digestive issues before you do that or things will get nasty… many people have trouble digesting MCT at first.
There is a body of opinion among some researchers that MCT and or exogenous ketones have a place in treating neurological disorders like alzheimer’s disease. This would be especially true with patients that can’t stay in ketosis because of compliance reasons, loss of cognitive abilities etc.
But for weight loss and fixing metabolic disorders like T2D it is not needed.
I’ve had the same bottle for 5 months. I don’t do bulletproof anything but if I’m going to skip breakfast, I’ll put a tablespoon in my coffee. It no longer has the “run to the restroom” side effect (or benefit) but it gets me through to lunch. I find I need it less and less.
I did MCT oil in my coffee for six months. I suppose if may have helped in the beginning to assist in the change from carbs to fat for energy. It could also be voodoo and not even relevant to anything I just don’t know. Anyway I am adapted now and stopped at six months to break a stall and also stopped adding heavy cream & cheese to my eggs. I can’t tell any difference other than my weight started to move down gradually. So I say beyond the first six weeks I would ease up on it if weight loss is main goal assuming you are not having hunger issues in the morning.
I started taking it when my mom was taking it for dementia, and realized that I’m getting some brain benefits. It also acts as an appetite suppressant. So some of my “hunger” may have been from brain fuel insufficiency. (Early stage dementia?). I will take it until I no longer need it.
