My thought process here is as I’m not eating anything, so there is no calcium for the D3 to help the body absorb. But perhaps I’m wrong … and fasting makes taking these more effective.

I wouldn’t bother. While there may be some fat present in the capsule it may not be enough to maximise absorption. You’d probably absorb some but maybe wouldn’t get quite the same bang for your buck.
