I have been doing KETO quite successfully for a little over 2 months. I have been listening to pod casts and doing much reading. I am tempted to quite the Statins before my blood test and Dr.’s Appointment in a month. Also, my Dr. was the one that suggested KETO and Intermittant fasting and reading The Obesity Codes. Anxious to hear your ideas.
I have lost lots, feel GREAT and people mention that I look better.
Maybe move the blood test up (or pay for one yourself) before stopping the statins?
It might be useful to know what your cholesterol numbers are after being on keto for 2+ months but before discontinuing statins. Then take another test after you’ve been off statins for a while.
If your Dr. is supportive of keto, IF and Dr. Fung, I’d be amazed if they weren’t open to the idea of getting off statins - or at least running a lipid particle size test. Sounds like you found a winner, why not ask them about it?
(Yeah, I’d ditch the statins anyway, but it might be an interesting conversation if you actually have a health care professional who’s awake.)
check out the Feldman Protocol from http://cholesterolcode.com/extreme-cholesterol-drop-experiment/
While it has worked for countless others, it didn’t work for me - and I was eating 5500 kCals a day for 3 days - couldn’t wait to stop eating and fast for 2-3 days to recover!!
I never thought the day would come when the thought of eating would repulse me!!
Thanks for opinions. I started statins long ago when we all thought they were the miracle drug. I still have not decided whether to take them or not. Might do blood test and then quite. Dr. mentioned she thought drug companies were pushing them. I am finding out I was lucky to happen upon her.
My suggestion is have the conversation with the Dr. If they are strongly of the view that you should have them ask them why and get into the details and the studies. If nothing else, you’ll be giving your Dr some education!
My view is that I will never go on a statin until and unless there is some independent studies that clearly show they reduce all cause mortality. At the moment, as far as I can see there are NONE that do this. Success in reducing LDL cholesterol, sure, loads of studies that do that, but where’s the proof that lower cholesterol reduces ACM. It simply doesn’t exist.
Started that line of thought years ago when I worked as a mechanic, kept on hearing others comment on how whoever designed “this” or “that” should be strung up by their fingernails, I had the thought that they should really be made to take it apart and put it back together everyday before starting work. Maybe they would put a little more thought into their designs… Doctors might think better as well. Then again, I think in here there has been reference to some studies about Dr’s being asked if they would recommend certain treatment regimes to their family members, and the answer has been “No”
Had an old girlfriend who ended up a design engineer, think she took some of my comments to heart about thinking about the folks who were going to have to assemble and disassemble her designs in the future. Had her stop and think about things a couple times.
The irony is that LOTS of doctors DO take statins, as they really believe in the CW. My sister was a GP in the UK, and she still believes statins are good for you… the CW will take a long time to change.
First, I will admit I have been enjoying a keto lifestyle for just a little over 18 months and I was on a statin (lipitor 20mg) once a day. To be honest, I wanted to stay on the drug to see exactly how my cholesterol changed while taking it and eating keto. After 18 months I know what my lipid profile looks like and and have a good baseline to judge the effectiveness of the diet vs the drug. So last week I finally stopped taking my lipitor, in six months I will do another lipid panel to see just how effective or ineffective this drug really is on my cholesterol. Honestly, I do not think the statin really helps when you are keto adapted, but this is my experiment.
Statins have a tarnished reputation, but you have to do your own research and then determine the risks vs the rewards of taking the drug. Now that I am keto adapted, and know more about cholesterol and how it functions in the body I do not believe I need the statin, but only time will tell. Good Luck Wyo…
THIS! It’s like every road leads to Rome, Rome being the (mythical) idea that cholesterol and excess mortality are linked. It’s almost unbearable how much effort has gone into R&D (mostly $$$$$D) to lower cholesterol without first confirming that hypothesis.

Since just over half the people with familial hypercholesterolemia live perfectly normal lives, never contract cardiovascular disease, never have a heart attack or stroke, and die at perfectly reasonable ages, I really suspect that cholesterol of any type cannot possibly be the cause of heart disease. Associated with, perhaps, but not the cause.
