To all women out here, I have a question : have you ever experienced that your blood ketones levels drop with shark week without changing your diet? This is my first shark week on keto, and this morning I measured at 0.1 , so completely kicked out of ketosis. Ketostix was also negative. My blood glucose was also slightly elevated… Is that a thing? I did eat later than usual last night, but kept carbs definitely under 20g…
I’m not too worried about it, attributing the drop to shark week for now, but I was wondering if anyone else had noticed that effect… and if so does it come back straight away when shark week is over?
Thanks for your input!
Shark week and ketones levels
You can thank your hormones for that. When I have shark week (like right now) all hell breaks loose. Bloating, ketones down, my blood glucose doesn’t seem to be too affected though. Weight gain. So, totally disregard what happens during shark week because once its done, your good to go. Just keep calm and keto on!
yes, yes yes.
It all comes back to normal but I definitely get a bit of a drop and a bit of an energy drop because of it.
I just eat more macadamia nuts. Because, you know, they’re amazing.
But yes - not just you.
Part of the reason I started keto is because I have a hard time losing any weight during my period and my period lasts two weeks. On keto I gain for two or three days, then I will lose for a week and then stall for the last few days. This month I lost about 3 pounds total during my period which is a lot better than nothing. Bodies are weird.
yeah - when I was still weighing myself I would spot my period coming a few days in advance because all of a sudden the weight went up for no reason at all. Maddening.
I don’t weigh anymore.
I have several pairs of the same kind of jeans. So long as they fit, I don’t give a fuck about what the scale says. It’s very freeing.
Thanks for your responses, I’m not worried about the weight, I get that this fluctuates widely, I was mainly curious about blood ketones, as I was a bit surprised to get kicked out of ketosis… didn’t think that would happen just because hormones ! oh well, we girls all have to endure I suppose…!
Im not either. I know the week leading up to shark week I start feeling sluggish, I retain more water than usual, I put on up to 5 pounds, and my mood is typically not good. Once Im on day 2 of actual shark week, I start losing the retained water, drop the pounds, and mood drastically improves.
You are still pretty early in your keto journey so the hormonal fluctuations can definitely screw around with ketone levels, especially if you are not quite fat adapted, which can take 6-8 weeks or more. Im coming up on 11 months keto so I am naturally able to detect less ketones in my blood anyway as my body has become pretty efficient at making the amount of ketones I need hence less excess ketones in the blood.
so this is my first bout with shark - I’m about 2.5 weeks into keto… and today i was RAVENOUS! So i made a deal with myself. As much food as i want, ate in between meals but kept it keto… ready for that unplesentness to stop… i haven’t been eating much becuase i haven’t been hungry so this feels so weird…
Anyhow - ketoing on
