Seriously weird bg readings

(Jan) #1

I’m hoping someone can shed some sciencey light on this. I’ve got the flu. Influenza, not a stomach bug. And I’m T2 diabetic. My bg, morning & evening, has been running between about 85 - 105mg/dL. Started getting a bit of a scratchy throat on Friday, ate some Halo Top ice cream, evening bg was 116. Not too concerned.
Then on Saturday, started not feeling all that well, had some more Halo Top (1/2 serving size) & some Keto lemon curd, and some sunflower & pumpkin seeds. My evening bg was 122. Ok, figure one of these “new” foods was the culprit. Still not overly concerned, variations happen. And I figured I’d sort it out once I felt better.
Sunday - really felt like crap. Didn’t eat much of any thing but bpc (1/2 cup) tiny bit of Halo Top, tiny bit lemon curd, tiny bit sunflower seeds. Throat feels like it’s been flayed. Drinking salted H2O, some green tea. Evening bg 145!
Monday: pretty much ate only some brie (to ease the metformin), a slice or 2 of bacon, and green tea. Evening bg 137!
Tuesday: called my Dr, got some Tamiflu, ate minimally: 1/2 bpc,1c chicken ginger soup Keto, made it myself), green tea, Mio in water, 1 tiny bit of Brie for the metformin. Was looking forward to a nice low bg…Evening bg: 150 mg/dL!!!
Seriously, what is going on?

Your BG numbers will go up when you are getting sick or are sick.

Really… why I wonder? My bg is always back down in the am, maybe not as low as I’d like, but much lower than the evening prior.
Is a puzzlement…

I agree with @tdseest that as your illness, an inflammatory process, progresses your BG will rise. I also wonder if you’re getting some kind of synergistic effect from the illness plus the Halo Top, which contains sugar.

Thanks @Jacquie, wondering about that synergistic effect myself. Never had it (Halo Top) before, so don’t really know how it affects me on its own. That’s why I cut it out a few days ago. Same for the Keto lemon curd. (Sure did feel good sliding down my raw throat, though…)
Inflammation is an interesting process. Wish I understood it more thoroughly.

I am/was (not sure what’s correct as I get good BG numbers now) pre-diabetic and I’m leery about trying Halo Top because of the sugar and because ice cream and sweet/creamy treats are dangerous territory for me. Luckily, it’s not sold in Canada.

Yeah, I splurged ’ cause I found $10 in an old coat pocket, my throat hurt a bit, & when I walked into the grocery store to get Ibuprophen, Halo Top was on sale. Seemed like an omen to me.

The medical term is stress hyperglycemia. It happens with illness, after surgery, etc… Your blood sugar should return to normal after you are recovered.

Thanks, I will look that up. After my head stops pounding…
