It’s not like they’re lying about it but why do they make it sound like a bad thing? LOL
Seen while out shopping for a blood glucose monitor
Because it is truly dangerous if you have T2D? All the pee strips have the same info. Low carb, one thing. T2D, quite another.
the seem to be more about ketoacidosis (high glucose, high ketones, low/no insulin) - not good for a T1D.
Not really. A type II diabetic is going to experience ketoacidosis only in the very late stages of the disease, when the beta cells in the pancreas have all died, and the body is no longer producing insulin. By that point, you are so sick that you would know you have a serious problem, and you would have gotten there by ignoring any and all advice about how to treat your disease.
This notice is aimed at type I diabetics, because even if they seem to be doing well, it is easy for them to slip up and mis-manage their insulin. The only way you could possibly have a blood suger level of 240 mg/dL and also be producing ketones is if there is no insulin in your body at all. Diabetic ketoacidosis is a hellish and life-threatening state to be in, and it is a real risk for type I diabetics.
I guess I shouldnt have made a joke about it, but the first half of the sign is funny to me.
I know, we are so used to talking about excessive insulin!
Yeah, was feeling like an idiot after I wrote that. Thanks for the explanation.
don’t feel bad! as a father of a daughter with T1D (diagnosed at 10, she’s 23 and well managed), I knew nothing about diabetes when she was diagnosed. It’s always been frustrating for me that T1 and T2 are both called diabetes - they’re really very different things, though they have insulin (lack of for T1, not enough, or body not able to use correctly for T2) in common.
For a T1D, glucose builds up in their blood, but since they have no insulin, that glucose can’t be used to feed the cells, so the body starts breaking down fat and eventually protein if no fat to produce ketones. Apparently glucose and ketones in high amounts don’t mix well!
honestly I wasn’t sure if/how ketoacidosis (DKA) affected T2D so I didn’t specifically mention it above. and DKA is one of the misconceptions people use to try to put down a keto diet - they think ketones are bad, confusing DKA with gluconeogenesis (body converting fatty acids into ketones into energy).
And 8 months ago, I didn’t know anything about the benefits of ketones, or all of the things I know about cholesterol, so it’s a constant learning experience!
@Kevin_Haney You might want to check out Troy Stapleton’s talks on the Low Carb Down Under channel on YouTube. He developed type I around age 40, and he recounts his experiences dealing with the Australian Diabetic Association as well as his progress in ketosis. LCDU occassionally has parents of type I children at their events, as well. You might not learn anything you don’t already know, but you might enjoy hearing other people talk about their experience with nutritional ketosis for type I diabetes.
I’ll check it out, thanks.
Fortunately my daughter is already relatively low carb for the most part, though she’s vegetarian so I worry she’s not getting enough nutrients. If I could just get her to add some bacon!
We had a problem when she was back in high school where they were saying she needed to get more carbs, assuming that she wasn’t eating and had an eating disorder… we stressed that no, she’s already eating more healthy than the rest of us, just not supplementing with carbs. Even not knowing what I know about low carbs and insulin, that seemed crazy to me at the time that they were pushing more carbs on someone who’s body couldn’t handle carbs! as if carbs are the only way to feed the body.
BTW T2D can also go into diabetic ketoacidosis if they are on SGLT2 inhibitors (Invokana and its friends), especially if they are on a low-carb diet, get dehydrated, sick or consume a lot of alcohol. DKA is a serious, life-threatening medical condition. What’s not well-known is that DKA in type 2 diabetics on SLGT2 inhibitors can occur even without high blood glucose levels.
And lots of people making money selling them to us!
