Seed oils and a discussion with my 17 yo son

What is the definition of olives oil?

He has decided to do a short paper on the topic of seed oils versus animal fats (if a short paper is possible), for his writing class. I told him to look/skim all the materials I gave him before he decides for certain he wants to write on this topic. It’s supposed to be a 5 - 7 page paper, so should be easy. It will be a “for and against” type of paper, showing both perspectives.

Omar, thanks for your comment. My sons are very good at researching topics and letting me know when they think I am wrong! We do encourage critical thinking in this family. My husband and I do listen to various perspectives and then look for actual evidence versus endlessly repeated and regurgitated opinions.

I am really glad that you think like that.

Yes, our kids are similar. I don’t tell mine what to do. They would go running in the opposite direction. And they are 39 and 40! So, not really kids, but…. Still don’t want me telling them what to do. I get it.

so agree with this. I am ancient kinda HA at hitting 60 but with my 17 yr old DD I must must must listen to new thoughts in this age she is growing up in and darn if she don’t show me a ton of things, but one thing I won’t do is ‘lay down the law’ about learning and knoweldge and groiwng in any direction…now laying down the law!, don’t ya think a boy is staying overnight in your bedroom!! (well I don’t have that issue with her) but that is law…but real life thoughts should be a listening agent to us olders for sure. Of course I roll eyes at her and she rolls at me but in the end, let them thrive and learn and if we don’t damp that down we all win I think. Loved your post!

one thing mom said, the minute we are married she is out of our lives on advice, unless asked and even then it ain’t gonna be ‘too involved’ ya know…I had the best mom in the world. You grow them up good, ya can let go and let adults thrive on their own, well worked for us that way HA

I found this informative:

Death by Vegetable Oil: What the Studies Say

excerpt:

In the Sydney Diet-Heart Study, researchers separated study participants into two groups. Both groups consumed the same amount of fat and oil, but the first group’s fat came primarily from vegetable oil sources like safflower oil and margarine while the second group’s fat came from sources like olive oil and butter. Everything else about their diets and lifestyles remained unchanged.

Both groups were monitored and evaluated regularly for the next seven years. The result? The group consuming more vegetable oil had a 62% higher rate of death during the seven-year study compared to the group eating less vegetable oil.

There are some tools to help partition and recall studies. I think Amber O’Hearn and Siobhan Huggins, both on Twitter, use versions of these. The tools could help, otherwise it’s a nightmare trying to find studies.

For instance, I know I have an old RCT of soybean oil, olive oil, and lard (I think), where the best-performing was lard, and both olive oil and soybean oil were the worst. This is for heart disease. But I can’t find the study.
