Second time on keto, no progress

#1

Hello everyone, Last summer (2019) i’ve lost around 10 kg on keto in about a month, which was pretty amazing. However, because of the stress about COVID and work (also, the lockdown didn’t help) i’ve regained much more than i’ve lost. So, for the last month i’ve been back on keto and so far no results…

I’m 1m71cm (5’7) and 100kg (220 pounds) at the moment. Last time I started keto i was 15kg lighter and my perfect number of calories was 1500-1550 a day. I started with that this time, but nothing was moving, so i’ve decided to take it to 1600-1650 a day, as I’m much bigger now. Still no change.

I’m eating around 130grams of fat, 70g of protein and 6g of net carbs. Also doing intermittent fasting and some physical activity.

I’m feeling pretty good, not hungry, no cravings, so it kind of shocks me that there is no progress so far.

Also eating clean keto, with the only exception of cheese. I’m thinking of cutting it to see if it helps, but I have no idea where to get my calories from otherwise.

I’m eating the same thing everyday : veal meat, eggs, cheese, nuts, olive oil, avocado and salads with green leafs

I would suggest upping your protein a bit and getting rid of the nuts. Nuts are easy to overeat and can be inflammatory.

I would also add that at 5’7” you are not getting enough calories.

When I started keto over a year ago, I actually gained weight. I went searching for reasons why and I read over and over about how people who had restarted keto, were slow to see results, if they were able to see any at all. This wasn’t my case because this was my first attempt but there is quite a bit of information out there, especially for women over 40. I am not sure if there is a connection with your age since it wasn’t mentioned.

I’m a female of 22 years
So I don’t think my age is the matter here.
Did you find the answer after searching ?

I’ll preface by saying I’ve never been significantly overweight nor lost significant amounts so I have little first-hand experience. The first six months of keto I lost about 35 pounds, but that’s my total weight loss experience. So just going to throw this out for discussion. If it doesn’t seem relevant then ignore.

You say you lost 10kg in a month in 2019. If that’s true, it’s amazing! It would be like nearly a pound a day and regardless how much of it was really water that amount of loss can not be sustained. That’s like The Biggest Loser on steroids. But if you forced your weight down at that pace, you maybe slowed your metabolism doing it. The Biggest Loser contestants were followed for several years. Every single one them had slowed their metabolisms and were actually burning more than 500 calories per day less than when they started the program. The slowdown continued for several years. All the contestants gained back their initial weight and more.

You don’t mention how long you continued your initial calorie restriction nor what you ate from 2019 until last month when you began keto again, but if it wasn’t keto then it’s not surprising you gained back all the weight and more. As The Biggest Loser contestants discovered you can’t eat a caloric deficit forever. When you start to eat ‘normal amounts’ again, the weight just comes back on simply because your metabolism has slowed.

So maybe you need to increase your metabolic rate. As suggested by @VirginiaEdie upping your protein - a lot! - will help. But you’ll also have to do some exercise to force your muscles to use the additional protein. In your case, if your weight is currently stable, I suggest increasing your total caloric intake incrementally allowing a couple of weeks between increments for your metabolism to adjust. You want to increase gradually over time without increasing your overall weight. If your weight starts to go up, stop and allow enough time to stablize again. Do not decrease intake, just stop increasing and allow time to stabilize. I think that will enable you to ratchet up your metabolism without gaining much weight in the process.

Hope this helps, but if you think it’s nonsensical feel free to disregard.

I would say this is progress.

The second time round is often more difficult. Since your name indicates that you are a woman, I’d venture that your hormones are probably being re-regulated at the moment, and you might start to see signs of fat loss in another month or so.

In addition to eating very little carbohydrate (to keep insulin low), we also have to give our body enough energy (to avoid slipping into famine mode) for it to feel safe parting with our excess fat store. You may not be eating enough food. Your carb intake is excellently low, but you could certainly afford to increase your protein to as much as 135 g/day (which would translate to just over half a kilo of meat). The quantity of fat should be whatever satisfies your hunger. Bear in mind, too, that the healthiest fats are saturated and monounsaturated. Most commercial foods are very high in polyunsaturated fats, which can be very inflammatory. Too much polyunsaturated fat can cause nausea, as well.

Since you have done keto before, I probably don’t have to remind you to keep track of the fit of your clothing as an additional measure of progress to the number on the scale.

I can’t loose fat when eating that much fat, also protein seems low. You working out? What’s the physical activity? Depending on that 1650 could be too much for you to loose.

#9

Pet peeve alert! It’s “lose”, not “loose”.

(Edith) #10

Just remember there are numerous people on this forum for whom English is a second language.

#11

Absolutely, no offense intended. And I would hope they (and any native speaker, for that matter) would be lifelong learners who would appreciate a gentle correction, especially because they would have seen it written incorrectly all over the general internet.

#12

No, sorry, I didn’t find any solution. But, it did seem really common so at least you are not alone.

#13

Pet peeve alert! Grammar Nazi’s!

You’re here so you like science right? Here’s a great study to take a look at.

#14

It’s not being a jerk trying to make things better.
Sometimes the though crossed my mind that I mention that almost everyone says “loose” instead of lose, well as English isn’t my first language, I even thought that maybe I know it wrong as the people who do that here otherwise uses the language quite well…
But if this is wrong, I applaud the attempt to make it better for everyone!
I respect languages, mine and English too and we should use it correctly. Some mistakes here and there are fine and even someone with a bad grammar shouldn’t be criticized as a person but fixing a mistake? That’s great.
I never would be hurt if someone pointed out my mistakes, I would be happy if that would be in a way that I could know it better in the future.

I don’t know if it matters if it’s a 2nd language or not. If it’s my 2nd language and I use it on a forum, I want to get better.

To get back on topic and not turn this into a grammar debate ----

I have found personally that I cannot eat any nuts, or artificial sweeteners, no salad dressings, and very little dairy. You are doing great with the low carbs, so you already have that sorted.

Are you eating in a small time frame? I found that IF eating just twice a day with a very long period of 0 calories a day makes a significant difference for me. I eat lunch at 1pm and supper at 4:30 and no calories from 5pm-until 1pm the next day. I also make sure I am keeping my electrolytes up and drinking enough water. If I don’t drink a lot of water one day --sometimes I actually gain some weight on the scales from that that goes away when I make sure I drink a lot of water again (on the next day it goes back down).

I wish you all the best in getting back to losing again!! I can imagine how frustrated you are at the moment.

Good luck finding that info. It’s brutal and I’ve been moaning about it on here for almost two weeks. It’s tough. I totally totally totally relate.
Don’t stop

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #17

I blame all such mistakes on autocarrot. I even get caught now and again.

#18

I’d say it probably does. Many things are missed when a language isn’t your native one. Like sarcasm, many people that don’t speak English natively don’t grasp that’s it happening in real life, let alone in text. Certain attitudes towards things are probably no different.

With all the differences in the world, political and otherwise for many many years now whether just via discussion, poll or otherwise there has literally been dozens of actual studies on this, the overwhelming majority of people can’t stand a grammar nazi. It’s annoying, it’s not appreciated and typically doesn’t contribute to the discussion at hand when 9.9 out of 10 people just read through it anyways.

It’s the internet equivalent of a 1-upper. You may need to look that one up. It’s the person at the party that always needs to be better than everybody else, that needs to make it known that they’re right and you’re wrong.

Google around when you’re bored, you’ll see there’s very few people who aren’t annoyed by grammar nazi’s.

I enjoyed reading this thread, the grammer debate was funny

but I get the pet peeve truly, I hate reading loose when it is lose HA
been on ‘diet forums’ a long time and somehow that little word did turn into a pet peeve of mine too :star_struck::crazy_face:

Kate you are doing well but up that protein intake. just ‘veal’ in that sentence and then a ton of veg means your fat intake and protein probably need more up and yea, drop nuts. Just think FRESH ALIVE food right now ya know. Keep it super simple. Great meat/seafood and veg on that plate. even think that in a smaller form if you want to snack, small meat and veg on plate  the more simple you go the better you are when we start.

and covid and stress and more…covid isn’t gone ya know and alot of people are still stressed, from economics that haven’t hit us full force to IT still being mutated and around and ‘it all ain’t done out there’ so stress can be just on ya still ya know.

don’t exercise too hard…keep it simple and lower key while you start keto again. then ramp up as you feel you can but it is ok to take it easy a bit as you get thru your adaption time again.

you got this!! great info on the board for you and just keep on truckin’ and good results will come!

I am 5’8 and was 244 so I feel ya on body type kinda…I am now into the 180s and believe me, if we eat clean and hold the fort, we get the changes we do want!! You are 22 and I just hit 59…but in the end, while the darn hormones do matter for menapause etc for us gals and times on plan, even younger you could have a messed up metabolism and hormones easily from those decades of eating a SAD menu ya know, so just heal up that body and changes will come! best of luck
