Scientific study of Leg Cramps

(Ronald Weaver) #1

Does anyone know what exactly is happening in the body when one experiences leg cramps ?
Is there a scientific study done on this ? If there is I’d like to read it.
Nearly a year keto and still getting leg cramps despite magnesium, salt, potassium etc.

Hell, I’m not going to die because of it, but I am curious…

From what I understand that can indicate a magnesium deficiency.

I’m right there with ya. A few things that really help me: topical magnesium, and epsom salt baths. I have to be diligent though, otherwise I’ll be cramping within a day or two. In my case it is 100% magnesium related but just ketoade isn’t enough.

This might help some -

I had mild cramps for months in my feet. Then it spread to my calves, and then finally my hamstrings. They all disappeared when I upped my sodium to 4 to 5 grams a day.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #6

You may find it easier to get your magnesium in the form of chlorophyll (i.e., as dark green leafy vegetables). A lot of minerals and vitamins are much more bioavailable in food than in manufactured supplements.

I started getting cramps in my feet that went away when I started regularly supplementing with salt.

Yeah, I think when the cramps starting spreading to other parts of my body, I had become severely deficient.

That’s what Lesliemont’s video post is indicating. Also a source of vitamin E stuff, which apparently is a good thing.

Thanks everyone, I realise my consumption of leafy greens has been a bit low, so I’ll remedy this and report later.

@Ronald_Weaver - here’s my vote for more salt. I eat lots of greens and supplement 2 kinds of magnesium, but cramped until I added salt.

I also say plenty of quality salt AND plenty of magnesium. I take 1000 mg magnesium glycinate every day. This has worked beautifully for me. Muscle cramps are almost certainly due to mineral imbalance/deficiency. Interestingly, when my minerals were messed up I got muscle cramps, big time. My husband doesn’t get muscle cramps, but he does get rapid heart beat when he doesn’t take his magnesium every day. One other note, he has noticed he gets rapid heart beat every time he eats a lot of nuts. Turns out nuts have anti-nutrients that actually deplete minerals from our bodies.
