Scary reminder

We have a dog who is a fragile diabetic. We got a scary reminder yesterday about how dangerous injectable insulin really is. Someone must have stolen his food in the morning and we didn’t notice. He got his insulin. When we got home from work my husband noticed he was stumbling and having a hard time standing up. I checked his sugar and all the meter said was “low”, meaning it was less than 30! He ate food and it came up after a while (211). From now on he gets crated while he eats.

Injectable insulin kills. It is one of the most dangerous medications out there, albeit necessary and life saving as well.

Poor little guy! They bring so much joy and love into our lives - I can imagine what a fright it gave you to find him in that state. So glad to hear he’s doing well now though. :dog::heart:

Bloob went to the vet yesterday for her quarterly glucose checkup, and she rocked her glucose curve

Also her insulin has come down a fraction since I wrote that blog about her … and she lost yet another 3 kgs down from 23kg to 20.2 kg.

Great report!

I believe my dog does not produce any insulin on his own, like a T1. He has no problem reaching blood glucose over 500 if he doesn’t get insulin.

When we rescued him 4 years ago he was on inappropriate insulin dosages and went into hypoglycemic shock resulting in a seizure and 5 day hospitalization. Since then he has been quite stable except for when he developed C-diff diarrhea and we had to change his food. Now he gets 7 units twice a day and has been very stable on that dosage for a long time.

He basically had IBS with diarrhea too, so the particular food combination we have him on finally controls that along with keeping him at stable glucose levels. That is if he actually eats.

It was explained to me by my vet that dogs really only get insulin dependant diabetes.

So nice of you to rescue a sick dog. Both of ours are rescues with lots of health problems.

Yes, that’s what I understand too.

Rescue work is one of my passions. We have 6 rescued Boston Terriers right now, all with various medical needs. We have a little doggie retirement home and hospice going on right now.
