Sam Harris interview with Gary Taubes

Interesting conversation
I love Waking Up with Sam Harris | #74 — What Should We Eat?, let’s play it!

I’ve got this queued up to listen to…

(Warren ) #3

Not great reviews on the discussion…

(Jacquie) #4

How so? Regarding Taubes? I can’t see comments.

Excellent podcast. I love it when Sam asks “How is it that we are getting ready to colonize Mars, and we cannot agree what to take for the trip?” How true!!

(Cathy) #6

Just finished listening to it and thought it was very good. I am still very upset about the whole Nusi/Kevin Hall debacle. Try to do something right and have it blow up in that way must be so frustrating. And to lose funding over it a double stab…

(Tim) #7

What debacle?

(Tim) #8

Where do you see the discussion?

(Cathy) #9

The Nusi funded study that was Hall declared proved that energy balance was the correct hypothesis. They talk about it in the podcast.

(Crow T. Robot) #10

What frustrates me about that is that it can all be laid at the feet of Kevin Hall’s unprofessional willingness to declare the Carbohydrate-Insulin Hypothesis dead in Yoni Freedhoff’s video, which of course was sent around by all the anti-keto folks, who of course declared victory and any time the question comes up, their answer is, “Your own study proved you wrong.” They rarely or never look at the actual data, they just parrot Hall’s declaration. They also never admit the fact that it was a pilot study which was never meant to be definitive.

Then, in an unrelated development, funding dried up and now NuSi is basically dead in the water. Which, means of course that the actual study will not happen, and we are left with just the misleading pilot study. Grr…

(Cathy) #11

Exactly! It would be so refreshing if these so called scientists would act like scientists instead of petulant children who are only interested in proving their point as they see it.

(Jo Lo) #12

This is all good, deeper than most, but the most interesting thing here is the discussion of the NuSi experiment.

“A flawed pilot study”.
“Just another of 90% of all science that can’t be interpreted”.
–with all the human squabbling that always follows.

I’d like to hear Dr Peter Attia’s take on NuSi, but he is staying silent after breaking with Taubes.

Liked the part about Taubes wearing a Grinch mask to lectures…

Good interviewer, knows his stuff better than most.

(Crow T. Robot) #13

Sounds a little like a falling out, which I don’t think is what happened. Didn’t Attia just leave NuSi to concentrate more on Verta?

(Jacquie) #14

I think Phinney and Volek are founders of Virta. Attia is the ‘founder of Attia Medical, PC, a medical practice with offices in San Diego and New York City, focusing on the applied science of longevity and optimal performance.’

(Jo Lo) #15

Chris and Jacquie, we don’t know much about it, clearly. In his blog people ask him ‘what gives about NuSi’ and he dives the question:

"– Have you or will you explain why you left NuSI?

Peter Attia March 16, 2016
I’ve said all I want to say about NuSI"

Fair enough, none of our business actually. I would just be interested in his take because I see him as a high caliber individual with a deep moral sense. I think that he’s wired a lot differently than Gary FWIW…

(Jacquie) #16

@trekkin1 Agreed! I’ve followed Attia for some time. You’ve probably listened to his interview in STEM-Talk but if you haven’t it was excellent. Here’s a link for those of you that may be fans of Attia.

Gary discussed the issue in great detail in Jimmy Moore’s podcast.

(Crow T. Robot) #18

You’re right, he is listed as an adviser, but nothing more. Not sure why I assumed he had a larger role.

(Jo Lo) #19

Man, did anyone read the numerous critical comments after the Taubes interview? The vegans came out of the woodwork with a vengeance.

But you know what they say, “if you’re taking flak it means you’re right over the target”.

(Cathy) #20

I LOVE that quote!!!
