Rough start up after 5 day water fast

Hi everybody,

So I just completed a 5 day water fast which went really well. I decided to begin Keto upon re-feeding in order to extend some of the benefits of the fast. I am feeling quite rough after a few days on the 20g carbs per day, stomach is really grumbly and pretty bad diarrhea. Also I am feeling kind of hot on the inside which is weird.

I’d be keen to know your opinions on if this is just adjusting to the fast or something you get when switching to burning ketones instead of glycogen.

It will pass. Stay hydrated. More salt (sodium) may help lessen the discomfort. You could even mix it with water. Best wishes.

Thank you, that’s reassuring as I have tried low carb before but not 20g, I don’t recall having this internal heat feeling but given how much of a retooling is going on with the bio chemistry I’m not too surprised.

Still good to hear it from those more experienced with this way of eating.

I’ve already been caught out with a couple of things I never imagined had many carbs, plain yoghurt and onions! So gonna grab a keto app to help avoid those mistakes.

You may need to experiment with what you refeed with. I had some issues similar to yours with the diarrhea, not the burning. Anyway, I’ve found that eggs, lettuce, and plain chicken breast work well for me after an extended fast. I need to wait 3-4 hours before I add any of the more fatty options that are commonly in my diet.

Good luck. It may take a little while before you find exactly what works for you.
