Rosacea and carbs
Hi @vickyldunbar8. I created a new topic for you to try and get some better answers to your question. The user you had originally replied to is no longer active, and your question is different than the original topic. I thought it was an excellent question though, and deserves some input!
I don’t know if increasing carbs would help rosacea or not. But some people find adding some berries can help with “keto rash”. If it is the same principle it is worth a shot! So not a lot of carbs.
Hopefully someone with more specific knowledge can help.
You may also want to search for rosacea using the magnifying glass next to your avatar. I found several other topics that discuss it that way.
I’m curious what others will say as well.
I’ve been using a topical cream my dermatologist gave me and that’s helped, but I don’t want to use it forever.
I wanted to chime in on this, as I’m someone who’s looking for help figuring out a similar problem. I loved the beginning of Keto, because I felt amazing, and had much better mood (I wasn’t expecting that), and energy.
I was kind of overlooking the rosacea and acne, because of the rapid weight loss, and how well everything else was going. That was about 2 years ago, and I still haven’t narrowed it down. I’ve tried to cut out dairy a few times, but I never was able to keep it up for very long, so I’m back on a strict elimination diet at the moment, beef only.
I also have some other issues that might be related (low iron, lightheadedness after standing up after crouching, hands sometimes cold) to this, assuming it’s caused by a bacterial overgrowth - I have not confirmed that yet, though.
I’m pretty sure that dairy causes me to break out, but it’s not an immediate effect for me, so it’s been hard to narrow down. I am pretty sure that casein makes me congested when I eat too much of it.
Hey fellow sufferer with similar story. 37 year old guy roughly 2 years keto. Had some really bad outbreaks recently acne on top of rosacea and am on my second round of minocycline 6 weeks and ivermectin. I’m also suspecting dairy but find it hard to give up. I can take or leave cheese but consume a lot of cream. Recently (before starting rosacea meds) I was on a ten day meditation retreat eating very little - one small vegetarian meal at lunch avoiding rice and bread , butter tea with a small amount of soy milk breakfast and dinner. It wasn’t until about day 6 that I noticed the acne receding. The acne returned once I resumed my normal diet (lots of red meat, eggs, cream, veg some low carb fake food). I have done a more dramatic 5 day water fast in the past with no noticeable difference to my skin.
A podcast I listened to recently (keto answers 60 Dr Paul saladino) mentioned how the doxycycline/minocycline that stops acne works by killing bacteria in the lower intestine. He says he doesn’t know what else could be causing the acne bacteria except for dairy(I’m probably misquoting but can’t find the exact spot where he says this).
Not sure about your circulation issues. Sounds like electrolytes or Raynaud’s (my mum apparently has this).
Sorry about the long post. Would love to know how you go with the elimination diet
Not a long post, I always appreciate information! I had a quick look at Raynaud’s, and I don’t believe that applies to me, as the blood flow restriction is never that intense (White fingers were used as an example)
I did start taking accutane again (I took it in my late teens), although I stopped, because of the thought process that I go through - “I’m not getting acne because of a lack of accutane, there’s a reason for it that I believe is metabolic or environmental”
With that stated, I also don’t want to go through the side effects of accutane any more, because it’s just masking a symptom that I should be able to figure out the cause of.
I also find it difficult going without dairy, but at the moment, I’m sticking it out. It’s either that or rely on a drug, and if I can figure it out myself, I want to do that. I don’t like the idea of needing to alter my body chemistry with drugs continually for the rest of my life, just to overcome something I can’t give up.
Lots of theories about where Rosacea comes from, the best one I think is SIBO or small intestinal bacteria over growth where particles of undigested food get stuck in the upper intestinal tract and feeds bad or good intestinal bacteria; drinking apple cider vinegar in water along with eating Garlic and Oregano is supposed to kill it and bring it within normal range over time? Apple Cider Vinegar in some water would probably also help produce more stomach acid before you eat to help digest the food that is not getting digested to begin with?
Usually undigested food is supposed to end up in the lower large intestines where the gut flora microbiome digests the undigested parts of the food for you that do not get broken down by digestive enzymes, stomach acids and peptides. In the case of SIBO what is supposed be happening in the lower intestines is happening in the upper intestines and is backing up into the stomach and irritating the liver hence the redness and irritation in the skin.
Eat fiber, starch and sugar…your feeding it?
Take a probiotic…your feeding it?
Doing a low FODMAP diet your still feeding it?
This.
I’ve often read that the state of our skin is likened to the state of our guts. A heavily populated good bacteria gut=better looking outter skin.
My face has a tendency to be reddish. Keto has helped this significantly, and in the past, colon and intestinal cleanse protocols, followed by some good quality flora products, have cleared a lot of my issue.
