Root Veggies and Blood Sugar

(Tracy) #1

I just discovered turnips. I was so impressed by how close to a potato they were but because it’s a root I wasn’t sure how safe it was on keto. I tested my blood sugar after eating one (about the size of a tennis ball), and it was 80. When you find a food that doesn’t spike your blood sugar, does that mean it’s okay to consume? I’ve always heard you are supposed to avoid root veggies on keto. Do some people respond to foods differently? Is there a direct link between blood sugar and ketosis?

Part of this lifestyle is finding what works for you as an individual so if they work for you, go with it. I personally like fries made from celeriac (celery root) although some may frown on the idea.

Sure
If it’s within your macros
Around 8 carbs or so

Maybe eating 2-3, " may " spike your blood sugar
Ymmv

Yup
For me, dairy wipes me out most of the time
Yuck
Others, consume daily and are just fine

Some info here

However, Others will chime in in this one and the science

Good Luck😄

I miss carrots sometimes, but dont dare eat them. I am way too happy not being hungry all the time.

I will actually eat some potatoes sometimes. Not many times, but part of a baked potato doesn’t seem to hurt me. And, since I like the butter and sour cream way better than the potato (I don’t crave baked potatoes), that’s not a bad thing.

If you’re testing blood sugar, though, make sure you test every 15 minutes. My blood sugar rises are only an hour long (as verified by CGM), so when I was testing by pin-prick, I likely missed many peaks.
