“The calories (we consume) can come from protein, carbohydrates, and fat. Carbohydrates are not an essential nutrient and so it is not necessarily an essential energy requirement.” — Dr. Robert Cywes

I have recently been listening to these podcasts from a conference by Robert Cywes at a Low Carb conference in South Africa. There are many aspects that I find fascinating within the talks but thought I would bring up a particular aspect here.

He talks about leptin, grehlin, insulin, insulin like hormones, glucogon and peptide systems and how they regulate the hunger and thirst systems etc do not regulate hunger because carbohydrates are a from a different system and override these systems.

Prior to this he notes how carbohydrates are not a required nutrient.

This info is from 14 minutes- 17 mins on the 1118 podcast. Lots of great info in the rest of the podcasts if you are interested.

Anyone else who can concur on the influence on carbohydrates in increasing hunger/ decreasing satiety?

I can only give my own experience and that is if I eat a carb heavy dinner such as pasta with a side of garlic bread then the next morning I will be absolutely ravenous; however, if I have a lighter dinner or even just a large salad thn my morning hunger is minimal or "normal ".
