Restaurant chicken wings

(Chris Kornelsen) #1

Anyone know how to calculate fat and protein and such in a pound of resteraunt chicken wings? I go with my family every wednesday and I cant seen to find accurate info on it. They arent costed with anything just deep fried.

I would avoid eating those if you can. The oils will be seed oils, and likely have been used well past their expected life.

A pound? Around here they sell them by the number of halves - drummettes and the part with two bones (fore-wing?).

The USDA site says for 100 grams (454 grams/pound) not coated with anything, just “cooked with oil” and “skin eaten” says: 25.8g protein and 15.8g fat with 0 carb. I’d round that up to 120g protein and 72 grams fat and then figure it depends on the exact wings you’ve been served. Which sounds like a good meal.

I’m with @ctviggen on avoiding seed oils, but “the dose makes the poison” and if you avoid bad oils in general, once a week ain’t bad. For going out once a week with your family, that’s not a bad cost.

Adding to what @ctviggen said, if the wings are frozen when the restaurant gets them, they have sometimes been sprayed with a solution containing sugar to prevent freezer burn and to promote browning.

I don’t know if that soaks into them, or whether it gets burned off during deep frying, but it is something to consider.

That seems like so much. I can easy eat 2 full baskets of wings and still be hungry

(Chris Kornelsen) #6

Yes but once a week indulgence isnt to to bad

go to Buffalo Wild Wings they fry everything in Beef Tallow

They have low carb dry rub buffalo flavor. I don’t know if they are deep fried but college football season (like right now) we get some every couple weeks and I don’t drop out of ketosis and I don’t have inflammation from seed oils. So seems good.

I also don’t eat a ton of them.

I’m in canada I dont think we havw those. I eat 2 orders of wings on Wednesday. That cant be 2600 calories hah I’d be dead full

You’re fine. Once a.week is insignificant. Just don’t eat the cornbread or fries.

Us this an absolute fact?

According to the Allergen and Preparation guide on their website, they’re fried in Beef Shortening. I found the following on the Gluten-Free Lifestyle page
" In regards to the frying oil , we use a Beef Tallow Shortening from Cargill to fry all of our
products.
The Shortening Ingredient Statement Lists: Deodorized Beef Tallow, BHT and Citric Acid (to
protect flavor), Dimethylpolysiloxane (added as a stabilizer)."

They have very detailed nutrition data:

Also an additive in shampoo

Not sure if that’s good or bad.

But I can source 100% pure beef tallow without the extras. Likely cheaper than they’re getting their beef “shortening”

Either way… better than peanut oil or any other vegfat

It’s also used in anti-gas preparations in combination with an antacid, and is considered pharmacologically inert, according to drugbank.ca . Additionally, it’s used to prevent gas bubbles forming during a colonoscopy. Don’t be drawn in by the hype surrounding it’s also being used in Silly Putty.

Beef tallow? Thats great, no I only have to fear the carbs from the sauce. umm I guess the beer may have a few too.
