Restarting Keto

(Andy Mole) #1

Hi Guys!

I’ve recently restarted my Keto diet after a 4 month break.

Originally i did it for 3 months and lost 35lbs! Since stopping I’ve gained somewhere between 5-8lbs which was to be expected. Now im back on it and hoping to lose another 28lbs.

I’m not expecting to lose the weight as quickly as before as i was quite overweight.

I’m expecting myself to plateau quite quickly as previous mentioned i’m only 5lbs or so away from the weight i hit and stalled at before. Does anyone have any experience on getting back onto the diet and have any suggestions on how to avoid the looming plateau.

I want to hit my target weight of 180lbs by mid December.

Any tips or advice is greatly appreciated

Welcome to the community here Andy.

Keep eating KETO, don’t cycle in and out. Adopt it as a lifestyle choice. Start adapting to life without carbs as the healthiest way to live. Yo-yo dieting with KETO does more than just cause weight to go up and down. You are losing metabolic healing that you worked hard for each time you do it. Eventually your body will not lose weight as easily. There’s a lot more than weight loss going on with ketogenic eating. :cowboy_hat_face:

Welcome to the forum Andy.

I agree with what @David_Stilley has said above. Keto is an amazing life style, if you just think of it as a WOE (way of eating and not a diet) then you will be successful for life.

Just stick to the basics of 20 grams or less of carbs a day, no sugar, no artificial sweeteners or processed foods, eat enough calories (from proteins and healthy fats) so that you are not hungry, and no snacking! If you start with breakfast, lunch and supper, and try to have at least a 12 hour no eating period from supper to breakfast (that you can make longer then 12 hours over time, but start with at least that, it will help your body’s insulin levels a lot). Over time, you will be able to lengthen this to a longer period of daily IF. Best wishes, and if you have any questions, just ask us, as there are many of us here and we want you to succeed!!

Just agreeing with David and Susan. Stick with it. There is a lot of healing that can take place at the cellular level, especially with our power source, mitochondria that requires or is at least aided by ketones that come from being in ketosis.

This is a Way of Life (wol) that is wonderful and healthy for us.

I’m definitely not cycling, when i initially did it, it was a complete change of lifestyle and i never felt better, it was the healthiest I’ve ever felt however I’ve been fortunate enough to have 3 holidays in a very short space of time which made the Keto diet impossible… Ibiza party holiday with the lads, family birthday trip and my partners birthday holiday. Just looking to get back to it really.

Gone back into Ketosis within 3 days which was a lot quicker than expected! Last time it took about 7 and i haven’t had the dreaded keto flu either which hit me really hard previously.

For me because of my lifelong obesity and food addiction, I look at keto now as my way of eating and not as a diet. Not knowing all the other benefits, however, before I started, what got me here was wanting to lose weight.

Being a man, I think you will be just fine and should lose the weight you want quickly and get to your goal. Seems like many of the guys here can and do drop weight pretty quickly. Just follow the basic principles, eat three hearty meals to begin with until you naturally don’t want to, consume enough fat, keep the carbs below 20 and lower if you can, and don’t count calories.

Good luck; please keep us posted on your journey.

Great commentary.

I just love to hear when people experience this. That was true for me and I think all of us pretty much - came for the diet, stayed for the health benefits.

Once you adopt keto as a permanent lifestyle you won’t need to stop keto for 4 months due to 3 holidays. You can go off keto for the day (or week) and then go back to 20 carbs or less. Or find a way to not make food part of the holiday - it doesn’t have to be.

I am too afraid to stray, honestly. I loved SAD food too much. I struggled with my food addiction for over fifty years until I found keto. My life was good before then, however, my body was a mess and my mind was absolutely consumed 24/7 that entire time (even when I was thin - how was I ever going to maintain it!?), with my weight, losing weight, food, dieting, failure, gaining weight, my appearance, etc. Now I don’t think about any of those things! I just pull some meat out of the freezer every morning, and make sure we have a vegetable or cole slaw in the house for dinner - that’s it. I feel like a million bucks and look “normal.” I can do things I couldn’t do for years. I have motivation again to do projects that never got beyond a desire. I don’t weigh myself and I don’t wish I were one size below what I am - it will happen. Every day is a gift. In addition to this, I don’t want to subject my body to that abuse anymore. Cheating isn’t harmless metabolically. Now, I feel like if I were to eat those foods that are manufactured and processed with all kinds of fake ingredients and bad oils, etc., I would be causing my body harm. Don’t want to do that anymore, even for a few meals/days.

I can totally relate to this and your entire post, Marianne =). I love Keto as well, and I just wish I had of discovered it much sooner! We are on the road for a lifetime of successful eating now at least =).
