Resetting my macros

(Lindsey Caudle) #1

I am about to lose my mind.

I am trying to figure out the proper macros for myself as I’m not seeing any body changes after 3+ months. The issue that I’m having is figure out exactly what my fat macros should be set at. I’m currently eating 20 grams of carbs a day, 65g of protein a day, but my BMR is 1971 and my TDEE about 2155 and I’m currently eating about 2100.

I feel like maybe I’m eating too much fat, but I keep getting so many different pieces of advice and they are ALL contradictory.

Heeeeeelp!

Yeah, you’ll get that

I like the Fung/Ramos thing where once you’re fat-adapted, you eat normally then fast for 36 hours then go back to eating (“feast-fast-feast”). And mix it up. Keep changing things around so your body can’t adapt.

I was listening to Megan Ramos the other day on a podcast (I did a post in my accountability thread about it) and she was pretty strong about people not fasting for too long or too often, in that it’s not a competition, and it seems that after 36 hours the benefits really taper off quite quickly.

But my question is then, aren’t I supposed to be eating at least of my BMR? Because of starvation mode or whatever it is or something? And once I am fat adapted then I go into the fasting for 36 hours does that mean that I eat until satiated during feasting time?

Sorry… I just have so many questions. I have read the Obesity code twice by dr. Jason Fung but I still have questions

BMR is a WAG.

Feasting is eating plenty, fasting is eating nothing (water and electrolytes and bone broth aside, basically). I’ll find the link.

That is a really really REALLY good book. I’m about to read it again. It’s permanently open in my PDF editor so I can quote bits out of it.

Please excuse my ignorance, but what is WAG?

Are you in actually in ketosis?
Unless you use a blood glucose and blood ketone meter, you’re just guessing. If that’s not working for you, its time to start testing. Nevermind macros or calories, determine how your body is actually responding to the foods you’re eating.

Yes I am in ketosis. I test my blood every eveninng and average between 0.9 to 1.2 as a reading. I just read an article/blog by Dr. Jason Fung that basically said because I am as big as I am (365lbs) and have so much to lose, I should be eating low carb (I never exceed 20 whole carbs), moderate protein (roughly 0.4-0.6g per kg which is 66.4g), and only eat fat until I am satiated. Then do three 36hr fasts a week on an alternating schedule.

I think I’m going to give this a try for a few weeks and stop worrying so much about hitting the fat macro. I have gained weight this month (about 2lbs) and even though I’ve been strict keto since August 1st, I have only lost 8lbs (it was 10).

I found block fasting was extremely efficient at losing weight for me. Some folks are so metabolically deranged that adhering to a LC diet isn’t sufficient. Basal insulin levels don’t drop low enough except during fasting. Since I’m interested in increasing my insulin sensitivity, most of the time I let my BG dictate how frequently I eat. If I don’t consume an excessive number of calories and eat within my carb tolerance, it turns out that I can eat everyday. If I over consume, it takes 1-3 days of fasting to allow my body to process the food.
