Reflux

(Phil Ware) #1

Anyone managed to reverse reflux through going ketogenic?
In particular silent reflux
The idea is with weight loss and better diet it might reverse for me and I can get off ppi medication

Not sure what silent reflux is but ai went from eating Tums and Previn AC daily to not needing to at all. I love and eat spicy foods all the time.

Yup, I did. I actually used to have to keep a cup of water with some baking soda mixed into it next to my bed each night. I would be awakened by painful acidic bile shooting up the back of my throat. Then, I’d have to gargle with the basic pH water to neutralize the acid or I’d be in too much pain to fall back asleep. I drank baking soda water every night before bed, too, but nothing stronger. I avoid taking medications of any kind, preferring to find my own way out of things that I get myself into. Happily, it all just went away in the first month of keto, so I definitely found my way out of that one.

Strangely, I also no longer crave spicy foods like I did before, either, although I know for sure the spicy stuff wasn’t connected to the reflux (loved hot peppers my whole life, only got reflux when I got adrenal exhaustion and metabolic syndrome). Pretty sure the capsaicin-packed spices were some sort of intuitively craved stimulant in an effort to boost my flattening adrenals.

I was taking Acid Reflux (ppi inhibitors) medicine for years. After two weeks of Keto I noticed that I had forgotten to take my medicine for days. Still have a half empty pill bottle a year and a half later. My reflux is better on Keto than it was ever on the medicine.

Thanks for replying
Silent reflux is when you don’t get all the usual symptoms
Like excessive belching and heartburn
Before if I ate late and then went to bed I would get the acid reflux rise up into my throat
There was no warning

Ok, I did suffer from silent as well. All better now.

1/4 teaspoon of salt, follow with a glass of water, is one thing to test for instant relief.

Just to clarify, I currently manage my reflux successfully through ppi medication and am 4 weeks into lchf…so far not a problem at all
My complication is that I have severe scarring of the oesophagus most likely down to years of reflux. My specialist has given me six months to lose some weight and improve my diet, he supports lchf. His observations are that despite ppi meds there has been no repair to the scarring over the last two years…so he believes that I am highly sensitive to normal stomach acid levels(he’s tested for it) and unless we can stop even minor reflux then the oesophagus can’t repair itself
My hope is that I lose 20kg (4 already gone) reduce pressure from a less inflamed and bloated stomach and then the repair should be possible. So at the moment I continue with the ppi meds with the hope I won’t need them once the repair happens in the oesophagus. So lchf will be forever for me hopefully

Mine went away before keto when we were mostly Paleo, only have it now if I eat store bought spaghetti sauce. I wonder if it goes away in keto because we’re not eating processed food.

I had AWFUL reflux, where I would often aspirate the bile and wake up choking and unable to breathe. Gone gone GONE on keto!

I was just diagnosed with barretts esophagus, and was told that high fat foods would make it worse. I’m actually hoping that keto will make it better. I asked a similar question on Facebook, and had several people tell me LCHF and/or Keto resolved their issue - this gave me hope.

I’ll bet they would–if you were still eating a ton of carbs along with them. I’ve noticed a lot of health problems disappeared for me once the carbs did.

For instance, classic symptoms of lactose intolerance evaporated even though I’m eating more dairy now than ever. That doesn’t mean I was never lactose intolerant in the first place, it means my body was so weak and compromised from metabolic syndrome that it accumulated a list of subsequent illnesses in a cascade effect.

That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it.

(Candace) #13

That would be awesome! I love cheese, but it does horrid things to me

YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary), but it sure as heck is worth a shot.

YES! Severe reflux for years, with swallowing problems. All gone now; the only time I need an antacid is when I’m on vacation and eating carbs - it really screws me up and I have swallowing problems in a few days. As soon as I get back on plan its gone. This woe is so anti-inflammatory- truly miraculous.

(Meeping up the Science!) #16

I resolved my reflux with a combination of a low carb diet, no gluten/grains, and minimal dairy. Dairy makes it shoot up and gluten makes it shoot up.

Dr. Eades wrote a post you might find interesting.

Thanks for all the replies
All very helpful and for me it sounds like this woe could be just what I need
I just sent the dr eades link onto my gastrointestinal specialist who immediately texted back endorsing the low carb method
Thanks everyone

I know this is an old thread but I’ve been searching without luck for 2 weeks for someone with Barretts esophagus who’s tried Keto and or fasting, and you’re my first lead!. My mum’s recently been diagnosed with Barretts and I’m a big advocate of Keto and fasting being great options to promote healing via autophagy etc but am not sure whether it’s suitable in this case, what with it being part of the digestive system. Hoping you see this message and would be kind enough to give me a little feedback on your experience? She’s also been told she has a duodenal stomach ulcer and diverticulitis…old age doesn’t come alone . I hope your health has improved

I’ve not been great at following the diet. I’m getting back on track, but I do have fewer issues when I follow it. Once, a few years ago, I was able to get off Prilosec for 6 months, but I screwed up. Bone broth and water was all I consumed for 5 days, and I had no heartburn

Thanks for your reply, sorry for the delay in getting back to you, life got chaotic all of a sudden! I’ll pass on your experience, it may help. Thanks again.
